LONDON — Investors may think that the replacement of Nestle CEO Mark Schneider with company veteran Laurent Freixe is "not such a bad thing," analyst Jon Cox said Friday. "I think confidence has been severely hit in the case and particularly in Schneider," he told "Squawk Box Europe." "I presume most people will think it's not such a bad thing at this point for Schneider to go," he said. Freixe, who joined Nestle in 1986 and served most recently as executive vice president and CEO of the Latin America unit, will take over from Sept. 1. The company has struggled to retain market share as consumers have shifted away from labelled products amid inflationary pressures.

Nestle is launching a new frozen-food brand, Vital Pursuit, aimed at the growing market of consumers who are using GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. In October, Walmart's U.S. CEO John Furner told Bloomberg that people who pick up GLP-1 drugs from its pharmacies are buying less food, typically with fewer calories. But Nestle sees an opportunity to cater to those consumers through Vital Pursuit. Vital Pursuit's packaging won't include mentions of GLP-1 medications, but Nestle said the company will more directly connect the brand to the drugs on social media. The food company expects that its global growth will slow this year as inflation-weary consumers buy less of its products.

Consumers are spending more of their budgets on food than they have in 30 years. And high food costs could stick around for a while, executives and small business owners have said. US consumers spent 11.3% of their disposable income on food in 2022, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing data from the US Department of Agriculture. How Nescafé came to dominate the instant coffee market

Soluble coffee accounts for about a quarter of the beverage consumed globally, according to Brazilian Instant Coffee Industry Association, and that number is rising. "People often think that people have stopped drinking instant coffee because we have so much specialty coffee in abundance today," said coffee expert Jake Leonti at food and beverage consulting firm F+B Therapy. Known for its affordability and convenience, instant coffee is known as the black sheep of the coffee world. And yet 6,100 cups of Nescafé instant coffee are consumed every second, according to the company, Swiss-based food giant Nestlé's largest coffee brand. Worldwide one in seven cups of coffee consumed is a Nescafé.

Nespresso is brewing up competition in the U.S. coffee pod market. Nestlé's Nespresso, meanwhile, has had more success around the world, in a global retail coffee market that the Swiss food and beverage giant says is valued at about $100 billion. Nespresso's rise comes after the Keurig system took the U.S. by storm a decade ago. The company grew its domestic coffee sales by nearly $3 billion in the four-year span between 2009 and 2013. "There's still over 50 million households left in the U.S. coffee market that we look at and say, 'how do we meet the needs of those users?'"

One of the downsides of taking new anti-obesity medications is that patients tend to lose lean muscle mass along with body fat. "This is a major shortcoming in terms of not just quality of life for the patients who have to lose lean muscle mass, but there's actually room to improve on the weight loss and there [are] other metabolic benefits to improving your lean muscle mass ... [including] you might have better durability of weight loss." The drug is being tested in a phase 2b study alongside semaglutide to protect against loss of muscle mass. Until then, patients will need to watch what they eat and focus on exercise just as they would on any other weight loss regimen. When that occurs, muscle loss will be an even bigger issue than it is now.

Nestlé is set to close an infant formula factory in Ireland due to falling Chinese demand. China's fertility rate dropped to a historic low last year, according to experts. The report cited dropping demand for infant formula in China, which it attributed to lower birth rates, as a factor in its decision. Real internal growth (RIG) - or a measure of sales volumes - fell 0.6%, meeting expectations.
