We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages

Without laborious renaming, everything behind those links — billions of them, a decade of digital content — will become inaccessible. We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages. The Department of Veterans Affairs is legally required to preserve all medical records for 75 years after the death of a vet — but it's having problems, in part because of a balky digital records system. "Over the long term, you can't preserve a digital object in its original form," says Manoff, the former MIT librarian. The Dark Ages, as historians used to call the early centuries of medieval Europe, lasted for 500 years.

But Lucy Guo, the 29-year-old cofounder of data labeling startup Scale AI blurs the line between the two archetypes. Yet this is the persona many have come to know since Guo left Scale AI in 2018. But, midway through the program, they pivoted again, this time to what would eventually become Scale AI. Lucy GuoThe idea of Scale AI came from a suggestion by one of their YC roommates, who proposed creating an "API for humans." At Club Penguin, I adopted colorful pets called puffles and purchased kitsch furniture for my virtual igloo. "I was big on Club Penguin, Wizard101, Moshi Monsters, and this obscure one called Ourworld," he told me. Club Penguin, which ran from 2005 to 2017, stands out as one of the era's most beloved virtual worlds. "That same generation logged into Club Penguin to play with friends." In 2017 it shut down Club Penguin and replaced it with a mobile version, Club Penguin Island.

Retailers Get ‘Phygital’
  + stars: | 2024-04-19 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Some experts say phygital (“physical” + “digital”) does a better job of describing how online and brick-and-mortar shops should work together to create a seamless customer experience. That became a necessity during the pandemic, when things like QR codes, digital payment options and contactless order pickups helped ease people’s fears about contracting the virus. Plus, some say phygital captures how retailers are incorporating augmented reality and A.I. Barry Collier, an entrepreneur who helped develop Neopets, a game with virtual pets, points to Ikea’s mobile app, which allows people to virtually sample couches and curtains in their own homes before making a purchase, as an example of phygital innovation. Sephora does a similar thing with makeup.

"During the pandemic, I realized how I was taking IRL experiences for granted and working remotely, spending less time with friends, I just felt extremely isolated," Loar said. "It was really centered around helping you and your friends make IRL plans to build stronger relationships." Since buying Neopets, Law said his team is in the process of restoring those minigames and modernizing them to enhance the experience. Competing in the current metaWhile Law is optimistic, he is aware that Neopets was born in a different era of video gaming. For Neopets, Law said the merch business would include both physical, like plushies and clothing, and digital, such as in-game purchases. In 2024, Law's team is planning to launch World of Neopets, a 3D simulator game that will utilize the existing Neopets world, but in a modern gaming environment. Does this mean that new Neopets games will replace the 24-year old Neopets.com?
