Tyka Nelson, a Minneapolis-based singer and Prince’s only full sibling, died Monday morning, a representative for Prince’s estate confirms to Variety. Born May 18, 1960, Tyka was the daughter of John L. Nelson, a pianist who collaborated with Prince on several occasions, and Mattie Shaw Nelson. She and two fellow heirs sold their interests to Primary Wave Music while the others retained their holdings. In a statement, a rep for Primary Wave said: “We are incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Tyka Nelson. She was well known as a talented singer and songwriter and Prince’s sister, supporting him and working to keep his legacy alive for years.

One Saturday morning in June, Amy Simmons spotted some sparrows flitting around a coastal marsh in Maine. She and her two companions, all dedicated bird-watchers, quickly identified one of the foraging birds as a Nelson’s sparrow, a small, round bird with a yellow stripe over its eye. The stripe over this sparrow’s eye had a more saturated, orange tint, and its breast was speckled with black and white. It was a saltmarsh sparrow, a species threatened by sea level rise. It also refreshed this weary reader by bucking the trend among young writers for affectless prose reflecting a passive narrator. Azumah Nelson’s second novel, “Small Worlds,” is longer, looser and less successful. The narrator, Stephen, a young Black Englishman whose parents came to London from Ghana, is not passive, but not exactly an action man either. There’s a languid quality to his life as he ambles around Peckham, a South London neighborhood that was once down at heel and is now up-and-coming.

The episode includes multiple time jumps, beginning with with Nelson and Lisa reuniting before her college graduation. The time jumps that follow include Hubert and Lisa’s separation, their reconciliation and Nelson and Lisa’s reunification once again. On Oct. 15, hundreds gathered in Telluride, Colo., to celebrate the life of renowned ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson . Nelson, 49, died on Sept. 26 when she triggered a small avalanche while skiing off the 26,781-foot summit of Mount Manaslu in Nepal. The crowd read like a who’s-who from the world of climbing and adventure. Jimmy Chin, who won an Academy Award for his 2018 documentary “Free Solo,” shared stories of a long friendship. Nelson’s death triggered an outpouring of tributes from people around the world, most of whom, like me, didn’t know her personally.

“Tim Ryan is running the best Senate race in the country and having to do it all by his lonesome,” said Irene Lin, an Ohio-based Democratic strategist who managed Tom Nelson’s Senate primary campaign in Wisconsin this year. After losing two presidential campaigns and a race for governor in the state since 2016, national Democrats are wary about spending in Ohio, once a quintessential battleground. The barrage includes a spot attacking Ryan, who has portrayed himself as a moderate, as a party-line voter beholden to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Other national Democrats have tipped their hat to Ryan, noting how his moderate message has put the seat within striking distance, if not higher on the party’s list of priorities. “The national Democrats have walked away from Ohio prematurely,” Griffin said.
