The witness, Cheung Kim-hung, said Lai believed a proposed law that would allow people in Hong Kong to be sent to China to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party would be used to crackdown on the territory's democracy and freedoms. He told the court that the image of Lai "was all along very clear, who pursued democracy, freedom and was anti-totalitarian". Hong Kong officials say Lai will receive a fair trial. The midair interception is the latest incident in the Red Sea where the Houthis have been attacking international shipping in what they say is a campaign to support Palestinians under seige from Israeli forces in Gaza. It follows a series of American and British airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen that have drawn threats of a "strong" response from the Iranian-backed militia. Earlier on Sunday, the Houthis complained that U.S. aircraft were observed flying close to Yemeni airspace and coastal areas. KYIV, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Two people were killed in an overnight Russian missile attack that hit a vegetable oil plant in central Ukraine's Poltava region, Governor Dmytro Lunin and a presidential official said on Monday. Ukraine's presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak said on Telegram the missiles struck a vegetable oil factory in Myrhorod district, killing two people and injuring five others. The Ukrainian military said Russia launched four missiles from the Black Sea overnight, two of which were shot down. The military reported that the Kryvyi Rih region, also in central Ukraine, was hit by missiles as well. Aug 23 (Reuters) - Five people were killed in a shooting at a bikers' bar in California's Orange County, CBS Los Angeles reported on Wednesday citing sources. Six more people were in hospital after a retired law enforcement officer opened fired at the bar, the report added. There were multiple victims, the Orange Country Sheriff said in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The CBS report said the shooting took place at a bikers' bar called Cook's Corner in Trabuco Canyon and there was now a large law enforcement presence. The California governor's office said it was monitoring the shooting in Orange County.
