I am minutes away from the ocean and one of my favorite restaurants on the island. This spring, I made the leap and moved with my two youngest kids to Negril, Jamaica. Overall, I feel like I have a better chance of longevity here. To me, the food in Jamaica tastes different from the food in the U.S. I knew only about four of my neighbors on the street and I lived in that house for seven years.

I work outside every day—and I spend lessWhenever I sit out on my veranda, I say, "My office is open." There is some incredible scenery right outside my door, so I work outside every day. But my expenses come to about $1,900 a month, including rent, utilities, childcare, food, transportation, school fees and home maintenance. A view from Travellers Beach Resort, where I often take my kids to the beach. Some folks here like to do "bush cooking," where they prepare food outside, and people will happily offer you a plate if you are around.

The food is pretty good, tooPeople may not visit clothing-optional resorts for the food, but I've had some great meals over the years. But even if you're not traveling with a partner, don't sleep on the spas at clothing-optional resorts.

Jimmy Buffett’s life evokes images of boozy chill-outs by the beach and a certain carefree calm, but in 1996 the singer’s seaplane came under a hail of gunfire in a dramatic encounter with the Jamaican authorities that inspired a song. Buffett’s song “Jamaica Mistaica” is a laid-back account of a dramatic near-death experience in which his plane, Hemisphere Dancer, was mistaken by the Jamaican authorities for a drug-smuggling aircraft. “We flew the plane in, got off, and as the plane took off to go get fuel, we were surrounded by a Jamaican S.W.A.T. team,” Buffett said in a 1996 Rolling Stone interview. “I thought it was a joke until I heard the gunfire.”
