DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Tommy Fleetwood were among the marquee players moving into contention at the season-ending World Tour Championship on Friday. 2-ranked McIlroy was, in his words, “stuck in neutral” on his way to shooting an even-par 72 in the second round, Rahm, Hovland and Fleetwood all had 66s on the Earth Course to be in a good position heading into the weekend. A special year could yet include a winner's check of $3 million in Dubai, where he said he was playing “stress-free golf” after just one bogey on Friday sandwiched between seven birdies including four in his last seven holes. 10, birdied four of his first seven holes, then nearly holed his approach at No. “I was trying to make some birdies on the back nine to get something going,” he said, “and I couldn’t.”___

McIlroy, who made more than seven million euros ($7.48 million) in prize money in nine tour events this year, is 2,083 points ahead of second-placed Jon Rahm, the Masters champion, with Adrian Meronk third. Poland’s Meronk played in this weekend’s Nedbank Challenge at Sun City where he added 94.5 points after finishing 15th. The tournament in South Africa was won by American Max Homa, who finished four shots ahead of Denmark’s Nicolai HojgaardThe top 50 finishers in the Race to Dubai rankings will compete for a $10-million purse at Jumeirah Golf Estate from Thursday. American Homa is on debut in South Africa but has mastered a difficult course and dropped just a single shot in 54 holes to finish his third round on 13 under-par for the tournament. He leads France’s Matthieu Pavon by a single stroke after they had shared the top of the leaderboard overnight. Pavon (70) carded five birdies and a bogey in his first 14 holes, but back-to-back dropped shots on 15 and 16 allowed Homa to leapfrog him on the leaderboard. The American's only dropped shot in three days came on the par three fourth, and his consistency in hitting fairways and solid form with the putter were a feature of his play. England's Tommy Fleetwood, who has won the last two Nedbank Golf Challenge tournaments, could only manage a 71 on Saturday for a total of seven under-par, six shots off Homa.

"Overall the first two days have been pretty solid," Pavon said. Pavon carded five birdies and an eagle, his only blemish a bogey at the par four 15th, as he followed up his opening round 68 on Thursday. Homa carded a 68 on Friday and is yet to drop a shot in 36 holes having sunk 10 birdies on his debut at Sun City. "If you are going to travel 20 or so hours to get here, you may as well play some good golf," he joked. Tommy Fleetwood has won the previous two tournaments played at the Gary Player Country Club and is four shots back going into the weekend after a second round 67.

REUTERS/John Muchucha Acquire Licensing RightsSummaryCompanies Fossil fuel subsidies hampering green energy rolloutMore clarity needed on rules for carbon marketsCalls echo Africa Climate Summit on faster actionLONDON, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Ditch fossil fuel subsidies, agree the rules for carbon markets and provide more finance to emerging markets. That was the clear message from business leaders at the Reuters IMPACT conference in London on Wednesday about what they say needs to happen at the forthcoming COP28 climate summit. The meeting of world leaders in Dubai beginning late November is seen as a crucial test of countries' willingness to accelerate action to limit global warming, with efforts so far doing little to stem global carbon emissions. Despite this, failure to remove fossil fuel subsidies would make it harder to expand renewable energy in some countries, Ingka's van der Poel said. "My concern is that we have very little hopes for that ambition to be raised during COP28," she said.

REUTERS/Siphiwe SibekoJOHANNESBURG, Aug 8 (Reuters) - South Africa's Nedbank Group (NEDJ.J), amongst the top five lenders in the country, recorded an 11% rise in interim profit as it gained from high interest rates, even as its bad loans grew. For the half year ended June 30, the bank's headline earnings per share, a profit measure, was at 15.25 rand ($0.8121), up from 13.70 rand posted a year earlier. But a combination of inflation, high interest rates and regular power cuts are taking a toll. JOHANNESBURG, June 21 (Reuters) - FirstRand (FSRJ.J), South Africa's biggest bank by market value, said on Wednesday its non-performing loan ratio would stay below its target range as it maintains its conservative lending stance. South Africa has some of the continent's biggest banks, which have built up a reputation for conservative lending policies. Africa's biggest lender by assets Standard Bank (SBKJ.J) and major local lender Nedbank (NEDJ.J) have said that their bad loans would rise this year. But FirstRand said its credit loss ratio (CLR) for the year would remain below its stated range. Its return on equity - a measure of bank profitability - is expected to remain at the upper end of the stated range of 18% to 22%, FirstRand said.

JOHANNESBURG, May 30 (Reuters) - South Africa's Standard Bank Group (SBKJ.J) funded renewable energy projects worth 55 billion rand ($2.79 billion) in 2022, exceeding its green financing target and putting it ahead of the world's top lenders, it said on Tuesday. Africa's biggest lender by assets earmarked 40 billion rand for sustainable projects last year, Kenny Fihla, its chief executive for Corporate and Investment Banking, said in slides prepared for journalists. However, in October he pegged that target at 50 billion rand. Standard Bank has been regularly criticised by environmental advocates and activist investors for funding climate-polluting hydrocarbon assets on the continent. "Our financing of renewable energy is 439% greater than our financing of non-renewable energy," Filha said, adding this achievement was significant when compared with the world's largest financiers.

South Africa has been struggling for years to overhaul its state-power company which is plagued by corruption and mismanagement and reeling under a 400 billion rand ($23.3 billion) debt pile. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana told Reuters last week he was "sharpening his pencil" to provide details, so far scarce, for taking on between one- and two-thirds of Eskom's debt in his Feb. 22 budget presentation. Eskom's debt pile is not just big, it is also complex. Another 15% is international bonds, held by global asset managers such as PIMCO, BlackRock and Fidelity, according to recent filings. Eskom's international bonds could rally if the government takes on two-thirds of the debt, Wolman said, while limiting that to one third or carrying out the debt transfer over a long period of time could be negative.
London CNN —South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa was forced this week to cancel a trip to Davos by an escalating energy crisis that is inflicting rolling blackouts on the continent’s most developed economy. At peak times, demand in South Africa averages between 28,000 MW and 34,000 MW. Electricity theft, including by impoverished townships in South Africa, and non-payment by municipal customers have made matters worse. Despite an abundance of sunshine and wind, South Africa still derives about 80% of its electricity from coal. South Africa’s National Energy Crisis Committee, a body run out of Ramaphosa’s office, has proposed several measures to ease the crisis in the short term, including importing energy from neighboring countries and buying excess energy from private producers.

SUN CITY, South Africa, Nov 13 (Reuters) - An emotional Tommy Fleetwood celebrated a first tour victory in three years on Sunday as he defied illness to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club. "It was touch and go on Thursday morning,” Fleetwood said. "All of us were there or thereabouts with three holes to play, but Tommy was the one who held it together. If you had given me second at the start of the week, I definitely would've taken it," he added. Fox hunting Nedbank Golf Challenge title after opening round 64

Nov 10 (Reuters) - New Zealand’s Ryan Fox carded seven birdies and an eagle for an opening round 64 to take a one-shot lead over Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald in the DP World Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club on Thursday. Fox, 35, is hoping to become the first New Zealander to be crowned Europe’s number one in the coming weeks having emerged as the closest challenger to Rory McIlroy at the top of the tour rankings. Victory at Sun City will move him above his rival ahead of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai and the son of former All Black flyhalf Grant Fox started his week well, with just one dropped shot on the par four third hole, having battled on the course in his three previous visits. Donald managed a faultless 65, including five birdies on his back nine, while Italian Guido Migliozzi sank three birdies in his last four holes to card a 67 for third place on the leaderboard. [1/2] A small toy figure and gold imitation are seen in front of the Gold Fields logo in this illustration taken November 19, 2021. Gold Fields' decision reflects "commitment to capital discipline" and to fairness for shareholders in Gold Fields and Yamana, the South Africa-listed miner said on Monday. Gold Fields shares fell by 20% when it announced the all-stock deal in May, denting the deal's appeal for Yamana shareholders. The Agnico/Pan American offer would only become effective if Yamana shareholders vote against Gold Fields' offer on Nov. 21. The counter-bid for Yamana shows gold miners are keen for new assets to supplement dwindling gold reserves and ensure their long-term growth, but Gold Fields' decision not to raise its bid is a sign of fears about overpaying.
