Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris arrives for a campaign event at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan, October 4, 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris is in "excellent health" and "possesses the physical and mental resiliency" required to serve as president, her doctor said in a letter released Saturday that summarizes her medical history and status. As Harris' office released the medical report, her campaign highlighted recent media reports raising questions about Trump's health and mental acuity and his failure to provide information about health status and medical history. Since Biden was replaced on the ticket with Harris, Trump's own health has drawn more attention. Last November, Trump marked Biden's birthday by releasing a letter from his physician that reported the former president was in "excellent" physical and mental health.

1 in 3 children worldwide is now nearsighted, study shows

Nearsightedness, or myopia, refers to when closer objects are clear, but distant objects are blurry. Nearsightedness is expected to keep rising among children and adolescents. This could be due in part to the fact that East Asian children start formal education at the age of 2 or 3, earlier than kids in other regions, the researchers say. Progression of nearsightedness in children can be slowed by taking breaks and avoiding hour after hour on the phone or computer, he wrote. Limiting up-close reading time outside of school — screen time or otherwise — may help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, he added.

A new superpowerOlympic athletes with vision impairment have shown that you don’t need 20/20 vision to get the job done. USA Goalball National Team Athlete and 4x Paralympian Tyler Merren says the only difference between a "Paralympic athlete and an able-bodied athlete" is the disability. “All of these athletes are so empowering to kids like my patients, who can see [visual impairment] is not limiting them.

The Conversation —You may have seen advertisements claiming to eliminate the need for eyeglasses through vision therapy or vision training — basically, eye exercises. These exercises include putting pressure on or palming the eye; eye movement exercises; or straining to read by using the wrong prescription glasses to “train” the eyes. Nor do these eye exercises help with presbyopia, or the need for reading glasses, which generally begins at around age 40. This decline will continue with age — and, with it, the need for stronger reading glasses will increase. Although some methods claim to alleviate the need for reading glasses, there is limited if any evidence to suggest benefit.

As my vision declined in my right eye, I began to struggle with lights at night, something I was convinced was a sign of a deadly disease — or my impending blindness. I began to consider laser eye surgery as a solutionFor the first time in my life, I began to seriously think about getting laser eye surgery. Despite coming across a few horror stories related to laser eye surgery of botched procedures and rare side effects, I decided to take the plunge. Being nearsighted is a risk factor for floaters, so I've had them for a long time, and unfortunately, laser eye surgery doesn't remove them. Laser eye surgery might not be for everyone.

Apple has introduced a new "screen distance" feature in its iOS 17 to promote healthier screen use. The feature tells users when they're holding their device too close to their face. So when Apple announced a new "screen distance" feature for iPhones last month, I was immediately intrigued. It's supposed to help combat eye strain and promote healthier viewing habits, alerting you when you're holding your device too close to your face. Click on "Screen Distance" and turn the feature on.

Children under eight would be able to use their phones for only 40 minutes a day, while those between eight and 16 would get an hour of screen time. “On the other hand, it’s easier for us parents to control our kids screen time,” she said. China has one of the world’s largest internet user bases, with roughly 1.07 billion people in the country of 1.4 billion having access to the web, according to the China Internet Network Information Center. The regulation could be useful to “help parents to supervise the children” and limit screen time. Impact on tech firmsThe new measures could present challenges for tech companies, which are typically held responsible for enforcing regulations.

The Best and Worst Habits for Eyesight

But many eye conditions are treatable or preventable, said Dr. Joshua Ehrlich, an assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Michigan. Here are nine common beliefs people have about eye health, and what experts have to say about them. Reading a book or looking at an electronic device up close is bad for your eyes. When we do, especially as children, it encourages the eyeball to lengthen, which over time can cause nearsightedness, or myopia. To help reduce the strain on your eyes, Dr. Zhu recommends following the 20-20-20 rule: After every 20 minutes of close reading, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

The latest iterations of the Apple Watch already have a heart rate monitor, fertility tracker, and temperature sensor. Bloomberg reported that additional features will be rolled out later to read users' moods by analyzing their speech, typed words, and other device data.

Eye Drops May Stave Off Nearsightedness in Children
  + stars: | 2023-02-14 | by ( Sarah Toy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Myopia tends to progress most quickly in very young children and tapers off after puberty. Drops commonly used to dilate pupils before eye exams could stave off nearsightedness in children, researchers said. Using low-concentration atropine eye drops in children could delay the onset of myopia, or nearsightedness, according to research published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Severe myopia puts people at greater risk of sight-threatening issues, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts, eye doctors say. About one-third of the U.S. population is myopic, and eye researchers expect the number will increase to almost 60% by 2050, as people spend more time on their phones and indoors on their computers.
