The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris drew a combined average of 30.6 million viewers across NBCU’s constellation of platforms, marking an 82% jump in viewership compared to the Tokyo Games and making the Games the most-streamed Olympics of all time. The network’s Spanish-language broadcast on Telemundo also saw a 26% jump over the same period during the Tokyo Games three years ago. “The Olympics reestablished its unique power to reassemble the American media audience,” said Gary Zenkel, the NBC Olympics president. “NBC Nightly News” anchored by Lester Holt averaged 7.6 million viewers during the two-week period, and the “Today” show averaged 3.1 million viewers, the network said. Last month, Comcast reported the streamer had lost 500,000 subscribers in the second quarter, falling to 33 million total, well below Netflix’s 277 million subscribers and Disney’s 153.6 million.

For example, this season started with the banks roaring higher on great numbers, legitimately great numbers led by a phenomenal Bank of America quarter. The later just made no sense because it is pulling away from Intel on the low end and if Nvidia really does have production problems then AMD is the de facto winner. In fact, the only stock that didn't suffer from an Nvidia relation, Apple, got through earnings without too much trouble. PARIS — Lighting the Olympic cauldron symbolically opened these Games — and, as much as possible, might have also taken a torch to some awful pandemic memories. The past two Games were staged in bubbles in and around Beijing and Tokyo as Covid was still a factor. And while some athletes have tested positive for Covid during the Paris Games, they have not upended competition. (NBC News is a division of NBCUniversal, which owns the U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2032.) How YouTube Took Over Our Television Screens
  + stars: | 2024-07-30 | by ( Nico Grant | John Koblin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Two years ago, YouTube abandoned its audacious plan to beat Hollywood at its own game. So it canceled the shows and fell back on the user-created content that had made it a household name. Now, YouTube consistently ranks as the most popular streaming service on U.S. televisions, surpassing the companies it once tried to emulate. Since Netflix started offering original content in 2012, TV networks have jumped into the streaming race, trying to outflank one another with major upfront investments. Netflix alone spends $17 billion a year on new series and movies as well as on older fare from other companies’ libraries.

Bally Sports regional channels are returning to Comcast cable TV customers. Diamond Sports — the owner of Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks — reached a deal with Comcast on Monday that will see its networks go live for cable customers on Aug. 1. Pay TV companies such as Comcast have been bleeding customers in recent years as customers opt for cheaper streaming options. Comcast said last week it lost 419,000 domestic cable customers during the second quarter and now has roughly 13.2 million subscribers in total. Once a lucrative business, regional sports networks have been particularly squeezed by customers leaving the cable bundle.

Discovery has filed a lawsuit against the NBA after the league rejected its matching offer to broadcast the league’s games for the next decade, ending the media company’s four-decade relationship with the NBA. “Given the NBA’s unjustified rejection of our matching of a third-party offer, we have taken legal action to enforce our rights,” a WBD spokesperson said in a statement. But the league said WBD “did not match the terms” of its deal with Amazon. While WBD maintains the rights to the NCAA March Madness tournament, along with the MLB, NHL and NASCAR, the NBA remains crucial to the media conglomerate. The cable channel TNT has built a programming slate around the NBA games, most notably the highly rated “Inside the NBA” show featuring Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal.

The WNBA's new media rights deal includes a price reevaluation after the 2028 season to account for the league's rising popularity, according to people familiar with the agreement. The WNBA deal has been negotiated within a broader $77 billion NBA agreement with media partners announced earlier this week. Instead, the NBA worked with Endeavor Group's media consulting team, led by Karen Brodkin and Hillary Mandel, to assess the value of WNBA rights, said the people. The media partners aren't forced to pay more based on the conclusion of the reevaluation, but they will be incentivized to do so, the people said. A little more than halfway through its current season, the WNBA has already had 16 nationally televised games break the 1 million viewership mark — a league record.

I’m not sure TNT ever had a chance.”“TNT matched the money, but the league knows Amazon and these tech companies are the only ones willing to pay for the rights when they double in the future,” Barkley added. It just sucks.”The comments came after the NBA on Wednesday rejected an offer from Warner Bros. Discovery to match Amazon’s $1.8 billion per year bid to carry the league’s games starting with the 2025-26 season. The decision set up a potential legal showdown between the NBA and WBD, the parent company of TNT and CNN, which maintains it has matching rights to any broadcast offer. “These partners will distribute our content across a wide range of platforms and help transform the fan experience over the next decade.”

If you ask Zaslav, though, the reason Roberts and other potential buyers of media assets aren't interested is because the government has scared them away. Or, perhaps, legacy media companies are simply undesirable assets to own. He extended the life of his previous company, Discovery Communications — and probably his own tenure running a media company — by merging it with AT&T's WarnerMedia in 2022. Without a deal, Discovery would have wallowed as a subscale content provider and owner of declining cable networks.
