"It's ominously quiet," Harold Tobin, Washington's state seismologist and the director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, told BI. The Pacific Northwest, by contrast, only found out about the danger posed by the Cascadia subduction zone in the 1980s. The Cascadia subduction zone pushed those mountains up about 10 million years ago, carving the mountain range that makes the Pacific Northwest so stunning.
