Ilia Malinin established such a big lead after his peerless short program at the U.S. After starting his program with a textbook quad axel — a jump only Malinin has landed in competition — he doubled a planned quad loop, fell on a quad lutz and doubled another planned quad. He followed with a perfect quad lutz before a mistake on his planned quad loop, which he turned into a double that appeared to slow down his momentum. Malinin recovered to land a quad salchow before falling on his quad lutz. The 29-year-old Brown, performing his “The Impossible Dream” program from last year, opened with two brilliant triple axels — one in sequence with a double — after missing the same jump during his short program.

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 14 (Reuters) - Quebec City, which has been without a National Hockey League (NHL) team since the Nordiques departed for Colorado in 1995, will host two preseason games next October featuring the Los Angeles Kings, the club announced on Tuesday. The training camp and games will take place at the Videotron Centre, a venue that opened in 2015 with the goal of one day being home to an NHL team. "I know how passionate Quebec City fans are about the game," Kings President and Hockey Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille said in a news release. The Nordiques were founded in 1972 and played in the World Hockey Association before joining the NHL in 1979. Canada's seven NHL teams earn ticket and concession revenue in Canadian dollars while salaries are paid in U.S. dollars.

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) and the union representing its players have been in contact regarding further safety measures after a player in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League died when an opposing player's skate blade cut his neck. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in an ESPN report on Wednesday that the league wants to prioritize protection but added that players have the right to make decisions for themselves. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which is the sport's governing body in England and Wales, said this week the safety of players must take precedence above all else and made neck guards mandatory from Jan. 1 for all on-ice activities. The EIHA did not make neck guards mandatory with immediate effect due to anticipated supply issues but made a "strong recommendation" that players at all levels across English Ice Hockey start using a neck guard. The NHLPA also educates players each year on the benefits of wearing the cut-resistant equipment so they can make informed equipment choices.

League backtracks on controversial Pride tape ban
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports Acquire Licensing RightsOct 24 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) has reversed its ban on players supporting social causes on their equipment, including the use of rainbow-coloured Pride tape on their sticks. The NHL had instituted the ban via a league-wide memo sent to its 32 teams ahead of the 2023-24 regular season, drawing criticism from players, fans and a number of prominent organizations. "After consultation with the NHL Players' Association and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season," the NHL said in a statement on Tuesday. The decision by the NHL comes three days after Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott became the first player to defy the ban with colourful tape wrapped around the shaft of his stick during his team's home opener. The Tiny Desk series became a prime venue for artists seeking an authenticity baptism. But for pop artists, it has become a tool with a very specific utility: demonstrating in-the-room chops. You don’t have to perform with acoustic instruments on Tiny Desk, but musicians often choose to. But Tiny Desk offers the perfect venue to present himself as a genre-transcending renegade. But Fred Gibson aimed his music at a Tiny Desk funnel, performing alone at a piano amid a nest of samplers and synthesizers.

CNN —Memorial Stadium was the place to be on Wednesday night when the University of Nebraska women’s volleyball team hosted in-state opponent Omaha. The official attendance of 92,003 in Lincoln – at what normally is the university’s football stadium – set the world record for the largest announced crowd at a women’s sporting event, according to the school. “Nebraska has the best fan base in the world, the best volleyball fans in the world,” Albert said before introducing head coach John Cook. “And I was thinking this morning, there’s only three things that shut down the University of Nebraska: 1) snowstorms, 2) Covid, 3) Nebraska volleyball in the stadium. During what the school called “Volleyball Day,” the record-setting crowd gave a roaring ovation to the fourth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team as players walked onto the court.
