Voters in California have narrowly rejected a ballot measure that would have gradually increased the minimum wage in the state to $18 per hour, NBC News projected Wednesday. Housing seems to be slightly more affordable for Gen Z renters than it was for millennials at the same age. The percentage of rent-burdened millennials — renters putting more than a third of their income toward housing — peaked at 62% in 2011, according to a recent Zillow study. And although rents remain high, slightly fewer Gen Zers (those ages 18 through 25) are rent burdened today. As of 2022, the latest data available, 58% of Gen Z renters nationwide were rent-burdened, while 60% of millennials experienced rent burden at the same age in 2012, according to Zillow. According to Zillow's analysis, there are a number of major U.S. cities where it's easier for Gen Z to afford rent than it was for millennials at the same age.

CNN —California is stripping the word “squaw” – a derogatory term for Indigenous women – from dozens of place names across 15 counties, state agencies recently announced. The updated place names are expected to go in effect by January 1, 2025. The upcoming changes are part of nationwide efforts to examine and replace derogatory terms on geographic features. The California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names approved renaming more than 30 locations, marking “a significant milestone for Native American women,” the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) said in a news release Friday. These place names should never insult communities or perpetuate discrimination,” Wade Crowfoot, the CNRA’s secretary, said in the release.

Postal workers across Canada went on strike starting on Friday over pay and working conditions, a work stoppage that is expected to severely disrupt deliveries ahead of the busy holiday period. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents about 55,000 people, said in a statement that it had begun the nationwide strike, which started at midnight, after a year of failed negotiations with Canada Post, the country’s main postal operator. The strike will shut down Canada Post’s operations, and no mail or parcels will be processed or delivered through the system, the company said in a statement. “A national strike of any length will impact service to Canadians well after the strike activity ends,” said Canada Post, which is owned by the Canadian government. Other courier services, which have been muscling in on Canada Post’s business in recent years, will continue running.

In the wake of last month's E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald's slivered onions, the fast food giant said it will invest over $100 million to boost restaurant sales and speed up the recovery at impacted franchisees. Of that total, $65 million will be invested into supporting owners who have lost business, targeting those in the hardest-hit states. Approximately $35 million will be invested traffic-driving programs, including marketing efforts, according to a memo to owners and employees viewed by CNBC. McDonald's will also be driving "local recovery plans for highly impacted markets" with more details to come in the weeks ahead, the memo said.

The mass forgiveness he promised on the campaign trail was struck down by the Supreme Court, and some of his other debt relief initiatives, like the Saving on a Valuable Education plan and his negotiated rulemaking plan, are currently tied up in court. But his administration has still managed to clear $166.5 billion in student loans, according to Department of Education data. Borrowers had an average of $38,207 of debt forgiven. "From day one of my administration, I promised to fight to ensure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity," Biden said in an October statement.
