But rather than one of the more obvious outdoor wellness and adventure hubs, it’s actually Taiwan. “Several factors have contributed to the rapid growth of outdoor sports in Taiwan,” says Kate Chen of the Taiwan Tourism Administration. “There was a huge spike in young adults wanting to go hiking or cycling.”But it’s not just locals discovering the island’s outdoor opportunities. Floating in the South China Sea between Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, Dongsha Marine National Park offers an entirely different take on outdoor adventure. They also provide a venue for more than 100 nature trails that are part of a national trails network created in 2002.

I do my research, set realistic goals, and choose hikes that are firmly within my son's abilities. I try to avoid a hike we can't reasonably complete. Now I take the time to fully research the hiking conditions, and I'll watch full POV YouTube videos to be sure I have the lay of the land before committing to a trek. I spent $170 on four failed northern-light tours, then saw the lights while waiting at a bus stop. AdvertisementSo far, I've spent about two years trying to find the best northern lights. During this period, I've spent $170 on four failed tours and gathered plenty of intel on the dos and don'ts of spotting them. Travel experts recommend visiting popular destinations during shoulder season for fewer crowds. Shoulder season, between the peak and offseason, offers less congestion and lower travel costs. Fall can be ideal for visiting US and European destinations with better weather and fewer tourists. Brandon Shaw, the cofounder and COO of The Tour Guy, recommends traveling during the shoulder season, or the time between a destination's peak season and the offseason, when travel is less popular and typically less expensive. AdvertisementTourism seasons vary depending on the location, but in many US and European destinations, shoulder season tends to land in the fall.

I didn't have a car, and doing work exchanges kept my fixed costs a fraction of what I spent in the US. My mindset was also different: I didn't feel the need to spend money to have fun like I do at home. But the mindset I had while living abroad is what really helped me save: I didn't feel the need to spend money to enjoy myself. I spent one summer living in New York City thanks to a work exchange I found on that same website. The traveler's mindset I had while living abroad encouraged me to explore, get creative, and find fun in the simplest activities.

Cheyenne, Wyoming AP —A famous grizzly bear beloved for decades by countless tourists, biologists and professional wildlife photographers in Grand Teton National Park is dead after being struck by a vehicle in western Wyoming. Unlike many grizzly bears, she was often seen near roads in Grand Teton, drawing crowds and traffic jams. Some believe male grizzlies kill cubs to bring the mother into heat. More than 1,000 people quickly posted comments calling her a queen, a legend and an ambassador for grizzly bears. Hunters sometimes mistake grizzlies for legal-to-hunt black bears or kill grizzlies in self-defense — and wildlife managers often kill grizzlies that prey on cattle and sheep.
