FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Federal mediators have rejected a union's request that could have cleared the way for a year-end strike by flight attendants at American Airlines. The National Mediation Board instead directed the airline and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants to keep negotiating over a new contract. “We look forward to continued negotiations with APFA and reaching an agreement our flight attendants have earned,” American said in a statement Tuesday. The airline says its proposal to pay flight attendants during boarding would make the 11% raise more like 18%. American, which is based in Fort Worth, Texas, is proposing to match Delta’s decision last year to pay flight attendants during boarding.

July 24 (Reuters) - FedEx pilots have rejected a tentative contract deal with the parcel delivery firm and the two sides will reopen negotiations, likely under the supervision of the National Mediation Board, the company and the pilots' union said on Monday. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) did not detail the reasons why members voted 57% to 43% to reject the deal. "Our members have spoken and we will now regroup," Captain Chris Norman, FedEx ALPA chair, said in a statement. The tentative FedEx deal included a 30% pay increase and a 30% increase to the pilots' legacy pensions. American Airlines (AAL.O) and the Allied Pilots Association are revising their tentative deal following the United agreement.

From over 97% of members who participated in the vote, 99% authorized union leaders to call a strike, if needed, to achieve a new contractual agreement with the delivery firm. FedEx pilots are currently working under contractual provisions and benefits arrived at in 2015, after negotiations for a new agreement began in 2021. Earlier this month, Southwest Airlines Co's (LUV.N) pilots union said its members had approved a strike mandate by an overwhelming majority ahead of the busy summer travel season. If either side declines, both parties enter a 30-day "cooling off" period, after which pilots and management can engage in self-help - a strike by the union or a lockout by management.

The Railway Labor Act was passed in 1926 as one of the very first labor laws in the nation. Because of the law, the House was able to vote Wednesday to impose unpopular contracts on four rail unions whose members have already rejected the terms, followed by a vote by the Senate vote late Thursday that did the same. The Railway Labor Act, passed in 1926, is the reason Congress could intervene this week to block a strike by freight railroad unions. But under the Railway Labor Act, management can fall back on hopes that Congress will give them the deal it wants. A major airline union said Friday that it has enough support among JetBlue Airways' roughly 3,000 fleet service staff to seek a unionization vote, in the latest move to organize workers. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said it will file an application for a union vote with the National Mediation Board. A vote could create the third major work group at the New York-based airline to unionize. "The IAM has sufficient interest among JetBlue Fleet Service workers to conduct a union representation election," the union said in a statement. Most major airline workers are already largely represented by unions, though some carriers like JetBlue are less so than some competitors.
