Now, the 35-year-old can call himself a World Series MVP. Freeman and the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed the 2024 World Series title on Wednesday, defeating the New York Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 to win the series four games to one. Freeman, entering free agency after that World Series title, wanted to stay with Atlanta. Freeman homered for the Braves in Game 5 and Game 6 of the 2021 World Series. Freeman celebrates his walk-off grand slam against the Yankees in Game 1 of the World Series.

An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. After Freeman launched his grand, Gibsonian walkoff in Game 1 against the Yankees, the Dodgers got the job done.

At World Series Media Day on Thursday, no one was a bigger draw than Ohtani. Ninomiya, 59, grew up in the city of Oita, obsessing over books about Japanese baseball history. The comings and goings of Mamiko Tanaka and Ohtani are regular fodder for Japanese morning shows. In Japan, Ohtani is the face of countless advertising campaigns. Ohtani’s presence — along with starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto — could help the Japanese World Series audience approach those heights.

The relievers stitched together 27 outs against a Mets team that had appeared allergic to cardiac arrest this month. AdvertisementWhen Dodgers officials thought about Ohtani, they conjured fantasies about endless streams of revenue and a decade of contending for the World Series. For a few hours after the story broke, Dodgers team president Stan Kasten wondered if the team had built its future around a fraud. The Dodgers hung nine runs on the Mets in Game 1, eight in Game 3 and 10 in Game 4. In Game 6, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza turned to Sean Manaea, his best starter, who had quieted the Dodgers in Game 2.

Objects thrown onto the field by fans at Dodger Stadium led to a roughly 12-minute delay Sunday during a heated playoff game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. With San Diego leading 4-1 entering the seventh inning of Game 2 of the National League Division Series, two baseballs were thrown from the grandstands toward San Diego left fielder Jurickson Profar. After the balls were thrown near Profar, he quickly approached umpires along with San Diego’s manager, Mike Shildt, to complain. Security officers lined the field as trash was thrown toward the San Diego bullpen, near Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. San Diego walked away with a series-tying 10-2 win to even the series 1-1.

CNN —The San Diego Padres hit a record-tying six home runs Sunday night to smash the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2 in a Major League Baseball playoff game marred by fans in Dodger Stadium throwing what appeared to be baseballs, and then trash, at Padres players. With the Padres up 4-1 at the time, fans threw baseballs at Padres left-fielder Jurickson Profar while he was warming up in the outfield. As Padres manager Mike Shildt and players met with umpires, fans started throwing trash onto the outfield grass by Tatis in right field. After winning a league-best 104 games in the regular season, the Braves find themselves on the precipice of elimination in the National League Division Series at the hands of the Phillies, in Philadelphia. The Braves must win Game 4 on Thursday night to bring the best-of-five series back to Atlanta for a winner-take-all showdown on Saturday. October 11 - PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies were in control for the first 14 innings of their National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. The final four innings of Game 2 were so calamitous for the Phillies that the series' momentum swung entirely to Atlanta. "As I've said many times, this is a tough team, resilient team," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday. "I mean, he's as good as there is in the game," Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Riley. That includes a 2-0 mark against the Braves in last year's NLDS en route to a World Series berth.

The Diamondbacks carry a commanding 2-0 lead into Game 3 of the best-of-five National League Division Series while putting the Los Angeles Dodgers on the brink of elimination. The Dodgers need to win three consecutive games to avoid the embarrassment of a second NLDS defeat in two seasons. Just about everything has gone right for the Diamondbacks, who have scored nine first-inning runs in two games and have limited Dodgers starters Clayton Kershaw and Bobby Miller to a combined two innings. In Game 2, relievers Ryan Thompson, Kevin Ginkel and Paul Sewald held the Dodgers scoreless over the final 3 1/3 innings. Lynn is 6-1 lifetime against the Diamondbacks with a 2.96 ERA in 14 appearances (12 starts).

But if you are a believer in momentum heading into Game 3 Wednesday, then the Braves just might be the team to beat. The Phillies said all the right things in the clubhouse after Game 2. Thomson and Game 3 starter Aaron Nola said vibes were good in Philly, especially with a needed day off to regroup. Nola gave up five hits, walked two and struck out six in six-plus innings against the Braves in a Game 3 NLDS win last season. So we just got to take it game by game.

CNN —For just the second time in World Series history, a no-hitter has been thrown as four Houston Astros pitchers completed the feat against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night to win 5-0 and secure their place in baseball lore. Cristian Javier started Game 4 in the series for the Astros, tossing six innings of no-hit ball, striking out nine and walking two. The only previous no-hitter in 118 years of World Series history is Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series. The Astros now hold the distinction of throwing the first combined no-hitter in postseason history, according to Major League Baseball. The only other no-hitter in postseason history was tossed by Roy Halladay for the Phillies in the 2010 National League Divisional Series.
The Phillies celebrate winning Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves. The Philadelphia Phillies on Friday afternoon will host a playoff game for the first time since 2011, the day Ryan Howard was helped from the field at Citizens Bank Park, the sort of imagery that tends to stick with a franchise. At the conclusion of that National League Division Series, at what would become the end of a glorious half-decade for the franchise, Howard had torn his Achilles tendon.
The Padres Head Up I-5 to Face Their Dragon: The Dodgers

LOS ANGELES—The San Diego Padres, an hour or so from advancing to a National League division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, stood by as six umpires ascended the pitcher’s mound Sunday night in Queens. The Padres were ahead and the opposing manager, a respected leader who had already made a show of collecting baseballs he may or may not have been suspicious of, apparently had decided that if the Padres were winning they must be cheating. Or maybe it was the way they were winning.
