Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is expected to play in the next World Series game against the New York Yankees on Monday night after injuring his shoulder in a slide Saturday. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told ESPN on Sunday that Ohtani was in good shape and “will be playing in game 3 tomorrow,” according to reporter Karl Ravech. LOS ANGELES — Fernando Valenzuela, the Mexican-born phenom for the Los Angeles Dodgers who inspired “Fernandomania” while winning the NL Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in 1981, has died. Nicknamed “El Toro” by the fans, Valenzuela had an unorthodox and memorable pitching motion that included looking skyward at the apex of each windup. The Dodgers named Valenzuela as part of the “Legends of Dodger Baseball” in 2019 and inducted him into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2023.

Rose was one of baseball’s greats – a winning-obsessed sparkplug who topped MLB’s all-time hit list with 4,256 over a 24-season career. It wasn’t until 2004 that Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball and the Reds, though he denied ever betting against his own team. Sometimes, on the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he also would hold autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore. While Cooperstown didn’t admit him into its Hall of Fame, the Reds got him into theirs with the commissioner’s permission. That was the perfect way to capture Rose, said Johnny Bench, the Hall of Fame catcher.

Orlando Cepeda, the second Puerto Rican native to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and one of the game’s leading sluggers of his time, from the late 1950s to the early ’70s, died on Friday. His death was announced by the San Francisco Giants. The organization did not say where he died. He was a unanimous selection as the National League’s rookie of the year with the Giants in 1958, their first season in San Francisco. He was also a unanimous choice as the league’s most valuable player in 1967, the year he helped lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series championship and played in nine All-Star Games.

That singular identity gives their stars extra glimmer, but largely removes them from a new game sweeping the baseball landscape. The name is Immaculate Grid, and with apologies to the surging Atlanta Braves — who had eight selections for the National League’s team in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Seattle — it’s the hottest thing going in the sport. The grid — named for the immaculate inning, in which a pitcher strikes out the side on nine pitches — is a daily quiz in the form of a tic-tac-toe board designed by Brian Minter, a software developer in suburban Atlanta. He said the game averages about 200,000 players every weekday.

CNN —The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Houston Astros in dramatic fashion Friday night to take Game 1 of the World Series 6-5 in extras. “The way we fought back in that game after being down 5-0, that is a Phillies win right there,” Realmuto said. Verlander, a likely future hall of famer, remains winless as a starter in the World Series in his stellar career. The Astros’ only previous World Series win came when they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017. A Phillies series win would give the franchise its third World Series title, with its last coming back in 2008.
