The pay limit has been in place since the end of a labor dispute that caused the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 NHL season. Sports business experts said the strict salary cap has helped the league's financial health since the full season stoppage. The hard salary cap is a stark difference from Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association, which have no salary cap and a soft salary cap, respectively. But the hard cap means NHL teams have to be especially diligent. The NHL is planning to start negotiations with the NHLPA in early 2025, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at this year's NHL Board of Governors meeting.

Friday could be a big day for Netflix , according to JPMorgan. The company is set to stream a boxing match between influencer Jake Paul and legend Mike Tyson from the AT & T Stadium in Texas. JPMorgan thinks the fight could be a record breaker and bolster Netflix's ad-tier subscriptions. Enthusiasm around the stock has jumped since Netflix boasted a top- and bottom-line beat for the third quarter last month. LSEG data shows that, of the 48 analysts covering it, 33 rate Netflix a buy or a strong buy.

Netflix's cheaper, ad-supported tier has reached 70 million global monthly active users two years after it was launched. The company said Tuesday more than 50% of its new sign-ups are for ad-supported plans in countries that offer the option. When Netflix launched its ad platform two years ago, the company said Nielsen would rate its content. Netflix offered its last update on its ad-supported tier in May, when it said it reached 40 million global monthly active users, nearly doubling the figure it had shared in January. Netflix also announced in May it would launch its own advertising platform, ending a partnership with Microsoft for that technology.

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins said the online sports betting industry is at a turning point as more people across the country realize they can gamble legally. "We're at a very, you know, important inflection point in the industry," Robins said. "Most people assume that it's legal in most states now if not all. DraftKings cut its full-year guidance for 2024 when it reported Thursday after the close, sending shares down nearly 6% in extended trading. "I would expect most states over the long term will have some form of legal sports betting, and hopefully we'll get those three."

The Summary For years, a special mud has been rubbed on every baseball before every major league game to make them less slippery. Called Lena Blackburne Baseball Rubbing Mud, it comes from a single source: a secret spot along the banks of a tributary of the Delaware River. The magic mud is applied to every ball used in Major League Baseball, including in this year’s World Series. The authors concluded that any attempt to create a synthetic substance to replace the mud — something Major League Baseball has explored — would be foolish. An undated photo shows Burns Bintliff, a prior owner of Lena Blackburne Rubbing Mud, with a can of mud.

And things went from bad to worse on Sunday when starting quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending injury. On Monday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanksi confirmed that Watson had suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, ending the quarterback’s season.

After a siding with the bulls in the run-up to Netflix 's latest earnings report, CNBC's Jim Cramer explained why the quarter made him more optimistic about the company's future, saying he was impressed by management's outlook and commentary about content. Netflix beat Wall Street's expectations for earnings, revenue and paid membership growth when it posted its report Thursday evening. The streaming giant's shares popped 11% Friday morning and maintained those gains through close. Cramer was encouraged by management's guidance for the current quarter and 2025, as the company expects to keep up double-digit revenue growth some investors feared would be hard to maintain. He also liked Sarandos' positive read on how AI will impact business.

One of the National Football League's toughest competitions doesn't take place anywhere near a football field. For the seventh year in a row, data scientists and analytics buffs will be invited to test their mettle against each other in the league's Big Data Bowl, powered by Amazon Web Services. The competition's goal is to distill the copious amounts of data collected from every player during every NFL game into stats and insights that the league and its teams can learn from. The Big Data Bowl was first introduced by the NFL in 2018 and quickly became a fertile proving ground for teams to find bright minds to add to their front offices. This year's competition challenges participants to use data collected before the ball is snapped to help predict what an offense or defense is going to do during a given play.
