Large drones have been hovering in formation over northern New Jersey, officials said Monday, leading to "unnerved" residents wondering what's behind these bright, unidentified flying objects appearing almost every night in the sky. The FBI and Morris County Sheriff's Department are actively investigating the aerial phenomenon, which has been an annoyance but not yet any kind of safety threat, authorities said. Morris County resident Julie Shavalier said the mysterious night shows have been keeping her up. "We're all completely unnerved," Shavalier told NBC News on Tuesday. "We are working with our state and local partners on the reported drone activity," an FBI representative said.

WASHINGTON — As Congress returns this week for one last burst of activity before it wraps up the session, it faces a key deadline of Dec. 20 to avert a government shutdown. “We’ve got to do a lot of things at the same time,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said of the first 100 days of Trump’s second term. “We’re going to be walking and chewing gum.”Some Republicans would have preferred not to get bogged down with a funding deadline early in the new Trump presidency. Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, which writes funding bills, said there's little time. “Once they decide what they’re going to do — if they’re going to try to get any of these appropriation bills done before or whether they’re going to do a CR for all of them until March — I mean, that’s the real debate.

In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

The United States on Monday launched its third crackdown in three years on China’s semiconductor industry, curbing exports to 140 companies, including chip equipment maker Naura Technology Group, among other moves. Chinese companies facing new restrictions include nearly two dozen semiconductor companies, two investment companies and over 100 chipmaking tool makers. The companies include Swaysure Technology Co., Si’En Qingdao and Shenzhen Pensun Technology Co., which work with China’s Huawei Technologies. The telecommunications equipment leader has been hobbled by U.S. sanctions and is now at the center of China’s advanced chip production and development. President-elect Donald Trump said Monday that he would block a Japanese company’s $15 billion bid to acquire U.S. Steel, a contentious deal that faces widespread political opposition. “I am totally against the once great and powerful U.S. Steel being bought by a foreign company, in this case Nippon Steel of Japan,” Trump said in a late-night post on his Truth Social platform. A senior Nippon Steel executive told reporters last month that the company hoped to close the deal before Trump returns to the White House in January. The deal is also opposed by the powerful United Steelworkers union, though some other U.S. Steel employees support it. Trump said he would find a way to preserve U.S. Steel as it is.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Monday to approve the promotion of a general who oversaw troops during the U.S. withdrawal from Kabul, Afghanistan, after it had been blocked by a Republican senator aligned with President-elect Donald Trump. The Senate voted by unanimous consent, meaning all 100 senators agreed, to approve Army Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue's promotion to four-star general to oversee U.S. Army forces in Europe. Sen Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., had blocked Donahue’s promotion, NBC News reported last month, citing a Senate aide. Donahue, who was commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during the Kabul withdrawal in 2021, was the subject of a viral photograph as the last soldier to board a U.S. military plane out of Afghanistan. An inspector general's report in 2022 found that decisions by both Biden and Trump contributed to the troubled exit from Afghanistan.

The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise. A judge has already ruled there is no merit to the idea that Hunter Biden is a victim of selective prosecution.

CNN —The Biden administration is rushing assistance to Ukraine in an effort to put Kyiv “in the strongest possible position” as Russia steps up its attacks and President Joe Biden prepares to leave office in less than two months. The new tranche of military assistance includes Stinger missiles, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and anti-personnel landmines. Still, two US officials and three defense officials told CNN last week that the Pentagon is unlikely to use all of the billions of dollars authorized by Congress to arm Ukraine before Biden leaves office. The administration has fewer than two months left to use nearly $7 billion, part of a larger package authorized by Congress earlier this year to help Ukraine in the war with Russia. For months, the US has run into the limits of its ability to replenish its own weapons inventories, which limited what the Biden administration has been able to send Ukraine.

South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, on Tuesday invoked martial law, a stunning move that threw the nation into turmoil. The last time that a South Korean leader declared martial law was in 1979 following the assassination of the president. South Korea's parliament voted unanimously to block the president's decree, declaring the shocking move invalid, but martial law remains in effect. The semi-official South Korean news agency also said that media and publishers fall under the control of the South Korean military. Hours after Yoon declared martial law, live TV showed South Korea's parliament passing a motion requiring the law to be lifted.
