Nasim Alikhani says she was a 23-year-old “twig of a girl” when she left her war-torn home in Iran, arriving alone in New Jersey in 1983.
Poor and disoriented, she commuted to Queens College to study English and threw herself into the cheap comforts of American fast food.
“There was a McDonald’s and a Dunkin’ Donuts right next to the college, and you could pay a dollar for this massive bucket of fries,” she recalls.
Yet she soon found her new diet unsustainable: “I gained about 20 pounds in a month.”
