NASHVILLE — One afternoon back in late March, family friends discovered a female cardinal resting on their patio, unable to fly.
I couldn’t tell for sure from the photo they sent, but I thought perhaps the bird had flown into a window.
Even knowing that the box would be ruined by bird poop, the family’s second grader immediately offered to turn her hand-decorated Valentine’s box into the cardinal’s hospital room.
But that’s not what happened when my friends took the Valentine’s box into the backyard the next morning and opened it up.
The children were watching as the cardinal flew straight into a nearby tree, where she was joined by a male cardinal who was clearly her mate.
