Wall Street got the big rate cut it wanted, but markets failed to sustain a rally. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut its key overnight lending rate by a half percentage point . Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, noted that the half-point cut suggests slowing growth is increasingly concerning Fed policy makers. "The Fed is likely worried that labor demand would weaken more, causing additional stress points in the labor market." "A larger cut probably was not needed out of the gate, but that should support risk-on asset allocation."

It's also common to draw parallels between the dot-com bubble and today's hype, leading investors to wonder if there's an AI bubble that's about to pop, too. Goldman Sachs' big AI headline of the month is "To buy, or not to buy, that is the question." The note from September 5, led by Peter Oppenheimer, suggests the answer is "to buy" but also to diversify. And the third is the application providers, which are the companies creating services for end users to harness AI. It comes from machine learning or big data workloads that various companies and governments use, Belton noted.

Starbucks sent shockwaves through the business world on Tuesday with its announcement that Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol would take the same role at the coffee chain, replacing Laxman Narasimhan. While Starbucks shareholders and Wall Street rejoiced , it's a double-edged sword for Tengler as a holder of both stocks. "While I cheered the move of Brian to Starbucks this morning, I mourned it at the loss at Chipotle." To be sure, Starbucks investors had to go through pain to get to this point. Heading into Tuesday's opening bell, the stock was down about 22% compared with when Narasimhan, the outgoing Starbucks CEO, took over in March 2023.

Dividend investing has always been a part of Nancy Tengler's career, which has spanned more than 40 years. She also looks at relative dividend yield, or the yield on the stock relative to its own history and the market, she explained. "It's really because of the power of the compounding of the dividend and the dividend growth." The tech giant authorized its first-ever dividend in April, so it does not have a history of dividend growth. "This is a name that's undervalued in many ways and they've kind of grown up as a company," Tengler said.

Investor darling Nvidia continued its artificial intelligence-fueled boom, with its earnings beating expectations last week. But some analysts are worried about a potential slowdown in growth from the previous quarter, or an "air pocket" in sales toward year-end. But investors who are worried about being overexposed to Nvidia or who want to make their portfolios more balanced could consider replacing their Nvidia allocation or complementing it with other growth stocks with a low correlation to the chipmaker. Using FactSet, CNBC Pro screened four exchange-traded funds for stocks that have negative or low correlation to Nvidia in the past month. The ETFs are Vanguard S & P 500 Growth ETF, Schwab U.S. Large-Cap Growth ETF, Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF and Fidelity Enhanced Large Cap Growth ETF.

Its shares jumped in extended trading but given the "blowout earnings," Nancy Tengler of Laffer Tengler Investments said she expected to see a higher move. "We think there's another way to play this," she said, adding these are namely buying into "old economy companies," as well as data center names. One such "old economy" name is Walmart , according to her. They've embraced not only digital solutions, but robotics, generative AI and their ad business in cloud computing, obviously in their e-commerce business," she said. Quanta Services , which builds infrastructure for electric power and renewables, as well as provides utility performance services, was another pick from Tengler.

Tengler named several attractively valued stocks she called the "picks and shovels" of AI, including Emerson Electric , L3Harris Technologies , Visa , Walmart and McDonald's . These companies are expected to boast continued strong growth and stock performance, aided by AI, she said. "Generative AI is much more compelling of a story than then the internet was in many ways," in terms of fueling productivity and growth, Tengler said. Walmart, another of Tengler's top "old economy" AI plays, has gained 14.4% so far this year, double the broader market. "They've benefited from embracing not just robotics and digitization, but generative AI in their e-commerce business and in improving margins," Tengler said of Walmart.
