SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Defense attorneys for David DePape, the man on trial for the attack of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband in the couple's San Francisco home, will call witnesses Tuesday as they argue DePape is not guilty of the crimes he's been charged with. Defense attorney Jodi Linker told jurors last week that she won’t dispute that DePape attacked Pelosi. She said that means the charges that DePape was trying to interfere with Nancy Pelosi’s official duties don’t fit. After his arrest, DePape, 43, allegedly told a San Francisco detective that he wanted to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage. Defense attorneys have listed four possible witnesses: Daniel Bernal, Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco chief of staff; extremism and antisemitism researcher Elizabeth Yates; federal public defender Catherine Goulet; and one unidentified witness.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The man accused of breaking into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home, bludgeoning her husband with a hammer and seeking to kidnap her goes on trial Thursday. David DePape lived a solitary life, worked carpentry jobs and was seemingly obsessed with right-wing conspiracy theories on the internet, where he railed about “wokism,” questioned the Holocaust and embraced Pizzagate and QAnon. Then in October 2022, the police said, Mr. DePape, 43, bust into Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home and bludgeoned her husband, when she was still the House speaker. The case will now be presented to a jury when Mr. DePape’s federal trial in San Francisco opens on Thursday. That the case is coming to trial at all is something of a surprise, given the evidence. Mr. DePape admitted to the crimes in a police interview after his arrest, prosecutors say.

Investigators said DePape identified another target who he believed Nancy Pelosi could "lure" to him. Two responding officers discovered Paul Pelosi and his assailant struggling over a hammer, which DePape allegedly used to strike Pelosi in the head before officers restrained him.

WASHINGTON—U.S. Capitol Police said they weren’t actively monitoring cameras installed at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home at the time her husband was assaulted and that the agency had begun an internal security review into the matter. The agency that guards the speaker and other members of Congress said it had access to 1,800 cameras, including some at the Pelosi residence in San Francisco, but the cameras there weren’t monitored at the time of the break-in last Friday because Mrs. Pelosi was in Washington.
