You may have noticed how desperate some politicians' fundraising appeals can sound. AdvertisementIf you're a person who's at all involved in politics, from the most seasoned operative to the casual observer, you're undoubtedly familiar — and perhaps a bit annoyed — with the desperate fundraising appeals uttered in the voice of politicians. AdvertisementWe weren’t quite able to reach our most recent re-election campaign fundraising goal. If the candidate is inspiring to voters on their own, there's less need to scare people into sending them money. "There's an assumption that the more desperate the appeals become the better the fundraising works," Pennington said.

And an expert in political violence and terrorism is worried the worst is yet to come. The justification of political violence online is getting worse, too, with increasingly high-profile people laughing off violent incidents. Plenty of such data exists about Trump's rhetoric, Pape noted, and he said there is no doubt that "incendiary political rhetoric increases support for political violence." "What you're seeing is real-world violence reflecting this significant rhetorical support for political violence on both the right and the left," Pape said. He said their rhetoric is responsible for threats and violence against him, even though they routinely denounce political violence and did so on Sunday. In turning so fast to Biden and Harris, Trump skipped past appeals for sympathy and even a perfunctory call for calm or unity. Until Sunday, President Biden for weeks had insisted that he would remain the Democratic nominee. But Nancy Pelosi's influence on the race likely proved to be a force too strong to withstand. Pelosi reportedly told Biden that she had trouble mapping out a pathway for him to win reelection. AdvertisementPresident Joe Biden earlier this month said that he'd step aside as the Democratic nominee only if "the Lord Almighty" came down and told him to do so. And on Sunday, Biden — weighed down by a growing number of Democratic lawmakers calling for him to exit the race — dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

As the two narratives intertwined, Chinese social media companies intervened in lockstep. (Photo by I-HWA CHENG/AFP via Getty Images) I-hwa Cheng | Afp | Getty ImagesChina's latest military exercises around Taiwan risk escalating cross-strait tensions — but war remains unlikely, political observers say. Beijing warned that the two-day drills, which continued on Friday, were aimed at punishing the island's new President Lai Ching-te for his "hostility and provocations." The drills are "legitimate, timely and entirely necessary," as acts of "Taiwan independence" in any form "cannot be tolerated," it added. "This pretext for conducting military exercises not only does not contribute to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, but also highlights its hegemonic nature," the ministry said.

David DePape, right, records the nude wedding of Gypsy Taub outside City Hall on Dec. 19, 2013, in San Francisco. DePape is accused of breaking into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's California home and severely beating her husband with a hammer. The man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison. He also admitted to bludgeoning Paul Pelosi with a hammer after police showed up, saying his plan to end what he viewed as government corruption was unraveling. Defense attorneys argued DePape was motivated by his political beliefs, not because he wanted to interfere with Nancy Pelosi's official duties as a member of Congress, making the charges against him invalid.

Bergès said that there was never any conversation with his buyers about political favors from the president or White House. It also counters statements by the White House that Hunter Biden does not know the identity of his collectors. The press secretary later clarified that it was not the White House itself that helped create the arrangement. Hunter Biden last week pleaded not guilty to nine tax-related charges, including three felony counts, related to his business dealings between 2016 and 2020. US President Joe Biden greets Chinese President Xi Jinping before a meeting during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' week in Woodside, California on November 15, 2023. China's President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden will strive to keep a lid on tensions between the world's top two economies next year, as they focus on domestic challenges. The two leaders met last week on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' meeting in San Francisco after the global rivalry between the world powers came to a head earlier this year. Their first meeting in a year capped months of diplomatic work aimed at normalizing their shaky bilateral relationship derailed by a suspected spy balloon over continental U.S. early 2023 and ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Taiwan visit in August 2022. "You'll see in coming months, the U.S. and China are trying to put a ceiling on their tensions for very pragmatic and domestic reasons," Steve Wilford, partner and Asia Pacific head of global risk analysis at Control Risks, told CNBC Monday.

As the 2024 presidential campaign heats up, experts on extremism fear the threat of politically motivated violence will intensify. Trump's loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election did not end the spread of QAnon-influenced conspiracy theories or its unrealized prophecies. “In 2020, millions of people were radicalized on behalf of this conspiracy theory. It’s really hard to tell who is going to mobilize on behalf of a conspiracy theory,” Kane said. “Spending hours and hours consuming conspiracy theory material is intoxicating,” Hughes said.

China's Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden had their first meeting in a year this week. Xi entered the talks in an unfamiliar position of weakness amid China's economic woes. It was a stark contrast to recent public remarks by the Chinese president, where he sought to blame crises and conflicts across the globe on US meddling. The New York Times noted just how quickly Xi agreed to the demands, with previous US-China deals brokered after days of painstaking diplomatic negotiations. Though Xi is hoping for a short-term decrease in tensions, Chinese economic woes are unlikely to have altered his long-term calculations.

Biden and Xi sought to smooth frayed relations at their meeting on during the APEC summit. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Defense attorneys for David DePape, the man on trial for the attack of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband in the couple's San Francisco home, will call witnesses Tuesday as they argue DePape is not guilty of the crimes he's been charged with. Defense attorney Jodi Linker told jurors last week that she won’t dispute that DePape attacked Pelosi. She said that means the charges that DePape was trying to interfere with Nancy Pelosi’s official duties don’t fit. After his arrest, DePape, 43, allegedly told a San Francisco detective that he wanted to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage. Defense attorneys have listed four possible witnesses: Daniel Bernal, Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco chief of staff; extremism and antisemitism researcher Elizabeth Yates; federal public defender Catherine Goulet; and one unidentified witness.
