Van Loon has observed WOH G64 since the 1990s and studied it as a student at the European Southern Observatory. The Hubble Space Telescope soon revealed it had indeed been a red supergiant in the past, perhaps 20,000 years before the explosion. “If this is what we are seeing (WOH G64) doing, then a spectacle awaits us soon,” van Loon said. The latest observable meteor shower will be the Leonids, which have been active since at least Nov. 6 and are forecast to continue through Nov. 30. They reach their peak Nov. 16 to 17, or Saturday night into Sunday morning. Meteors from the Leonids can be spotted in the constellation Leo, and they will be visible from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Leonids produce some of the fastest meteors each year, at 44 miles per second, with bright, long tails.

The latest update from Oct. 31 — after the general statewide deadline to request a mail ballot — shows there were 2,193,578 mail ballot applications ever approved. Combined with the deficient returned ballots that we already know about referenced above, that comes to about 8,000 deficient mail ballots that have been returned to date. Although this general election will likely see more mail ballots returned than the previous midterm, the trend so far suggests we might have fewer mail ballots rejected. Sarah Danser, a frequent competitor on the popular "Naked and Afraid" reality TV franchise, died this week after a car crash in Hawaii, police said. Danser, a passenger in the vehicle that lost control, was hospitalized and listed in critical condition. The driver of the car Danser was in was not wearing a seat belt and is in serious condition. Danser's "Naked and Afraid" costar Melissa Lauren paid tribute to Danser in a Facebook post on Wednesday. Danser was on Season 8 (2017) and Season 11 (2020) of "Naked And Afraid" as well as Season 4 (2018, all-star edition), Season 6 (2020) and Season 7 (2021) of "Naked And Afraid XL."

LinkedIn has verified more than 55 million of its users, for free, in order to combat the spread of misinformation fueled by the rise of artificial intelligence, the company told CNBC. The Microsoft -owned service said it has the most verified individual human identities of any major social network. LinkedIn began verifying users in April 2023. Social networks are stepping up their efforts to weed out inauthentic activity, including scams and misinformation, across their services. While peers are charging users for verification, LinkedIn is verifying people for free, and using a two-pronged strategy, with a goal of having 100 million users verified by 2025, the company said.

Last week, those same jurors found Ronald Lopez Andrade guilty of raping and later killing 30-year-old Yaimi Guevara Machado. Late Wednesday evening, despite not all jurors considering the crime to be heinous, atrocious, or cruel, in an 8-4 vote they still recommended death as a potential punishment. As for the criminal trial, Lopez Andrade will have another hearing later this year where the judge will have the ultimate say on sentencing. This is the second time this year a Miami-Dade jury has recommended death. In an 8-4 vote, jurors recommended a death sentence for Ysrael Granda, a man found guilty of ordering to kill his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
