New data obtained by some lawmakers shows more student-loan borrowers taking advantage of that new process. Elizabeth Warren led some of her colleagues in calling for bolstered outreach on the bankruptcy process. AdvertisementAn updated process for student-loan borrowers to get rid of their debt in bankruptcy court is working, a group of Democratic senators said. Discharging student loans in bankruptcy court has been historically difficult. Lawmakers have also introduced legislation to make the bankruptcy process easier for student-loan borrowers.

As federal investigations swirled around Eric Adams over the past year, the New York City mayor stuck to a familiar script. In one instance, an unidentified Adams staffer agreed to an interview with FBI agents. In March 2019, an Adams staffer was exchanging text messages with the then-Brooklyn borough president about another possible trip to Turkey. “To be o[n the] safe side Please Delete all messages you send me,” the staffer wrote Adams, according to the indictment. Later that day, the Adams staffer visited the businessman at his office and said he had just met with the mayor.

What I am hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done little to nothing to allay their fears. The caucus meetings House and Senate Democrats held this week were an airing of grievances and despair, but they didn’t chart a path forward. What they need is a process through which they can gather the information they need to make a final decision. There are two main camps among congressional Democrats. Representative Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is among those who told his colleagues that Biden should step aside.

The case for a Biden comeback always presumed that voters would mostly cast their ballots based on their views about Donald J. Trump. So long as that’s true, the path to a Biden comeback will be long and arduous. The best that can be said for Mr. Biden is that the worst of the post-debate crisis might — might — be over. Even skeptics like Jerry Nadler, who had reportedly told his colleagues that Mr. Biden should end his candidacy, appeared newly resigned to Mr. Biden’s renomination. And all of this follows a steady stream of Democrats who affirmed their support for Mr. Biden on Monday, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

But the president’s abject debate performance and defiance in the aftermath have badly weakened his standing in a party already unenthusiastic about his campaign. Any slip ups or confusion would rip off the fragile patch Biden has fixed on the dam of Democratic Party support. Biden needs one of his classic comebacks more than everStill, it’s too early to count Biden out. “We concluded that Joe Biden is old; we found out, and the polling came back that he’s old,” Fetterman told CNN. Many of the CBC’s members are in solid blue districts and may be under less pressure than frontline Democrats who have criticized the president’s debate performance.

President Joe Biden arrives to speak to supporters and volunteers during a campaign stop at a Biden-Harris campaign election office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 7, 2024. President Joe Biden defended his place at the top of the Democratic ticket Monday in a surprise television interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," after more lawmakers and donors came forward over the weekend with concerns about his reelection bid. "I'm getting so frustrated by the elites in the party" calling on him to step down, the president fumed. Biden insisted to hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that the concerns of his wealthy backers would not dictate his political future. "I want their support, but that's not the reason I'm running," Biden said.

“I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump,” Biden wrote in the letter, obtained by CNN. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us,” Biden concluded. More than a handful of top House Democrats told Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday that Biden needs to step aside amid concerns about down-ballot Democratic races. Biden offered a confusing response to a question about his letter to Hill Democrats calling for unity and lambasted Trump for being on the golf course after the debate. President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats increasingly appear to be on a collision course. Reporters are going to be asking any Democratic lawmaker in sight whether they believe Biden should remain their party's nominee against former President Donald Trump. As of Monday morning, five House Democrats have publicly called for Biden to step aside, while two have pointedly said that he can't win. AdvertisementAll of this makes the week ahead extremely important for Biden and the Democratic Party. The worst possible outcome for Biden is that a public consensus emerges among congressional Democrats that he must go, and that party leaders follow suit by issuing calls for him to drop out.

CNN —More than a handful of House Democratic ranking members told House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a Sunday call that President Joe Biden needs to step aside from the 2024 campaign, according to sources familiar with the call. Democratic Reps. Maxine Waters and Bobby Scott spoke in support of Biden, according to one of the sources. “It was pretty brutal,” a senior Democratic aide told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the private conversation among House leaders. One senior House Democrat said they have been on calls and group chats with dozens of their colleagues where the consensus is that Biden needs to step aside. One of the members told CNN they anticipate that is the day when the dam will break.

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled House on Wednesday narrowly voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress, a major escalation in the GOP's war against a justice system the party has portrayed as unfairly targeting Donald Trump. At issue was Garland's failure to hand over audio of special counsel Robert Hur's interview with President Joe Biden about his handling of classified documents. It's also unheard of for Justice Department prosecutors to go after the head of their agency over a contempt issue. Last month, both the House Judiciary and Oversight committees approved a report recommending that the House hold Garland in contempt for defying congressional subpoenas pertaining to the audio recording. Unable to come up with any wrongdoing by the president, they have now trained their sights on the attorney general," Nadler said.

A source familiar with the Governor’s plan said Hochul pushed for the delay due to concerns about affordability and the potential impact to the city’s post-pandemic economic recovery. New York’s congestion pricing would have been the first of its kind in the United States. “As a longtime champion of Congestion Pricing and the Congressional Representative of a significant portion of the Central Business District (CBD), I am disappointed by reports that Governor Hochul will not implement Congestion Pricing on June 30, as previously planned,” Nadler said in a statement. “For years, Leader Hakeem Jeffries has maintained neutrality with respect to the congestion pricing policy debate. Congestion pricing is a $15 billion lifeline for the MTA – critical funding that will be lost if the program is stalled,” the group said in a statement.

"There has been a lot of attention paid to language in the report about the president’s memory," Hur said, addressing one of the most contentious parts of his report. For that reason, I had to consider the President’s memory and overall mental state, and how a jury likely would perceive his memory and mental state in a criminal trial." Rep. Adam Schiff, California Democrat, chided Hur for including the references to Biden's memory at all. The issue of both Biden's and Trump's mental acuity has been an ongoing issue in the 2024 campaign, although polling shows that voters have greater concerns about Biden's age. “It is necessary to conduct this operation unilaterally and without notifying Venezuelan officials,” reads the 15-page 2018 memo expanding “Operation Money Badger,” an investigation that authorities say targeted dozens of people, including Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
