Those travelers need to get their gates fast and the moving sidewalk wasn’t doing it. The economics of airport moving walkwaysSome experts point to high maintenance costs for removing the moving sidewalks. A group of German economics professors released an extensive study earlier this year about airport moving sidewalks. “The design of Denver International Airport is such that our moving walkways run where our gates are located. Aleinikoff said that while he doesn’t think moving sidewalks are inherently unsafe, they do require regular maintenance, and he says the “teeth” at the end of the moving sidewalks can be “pretty sharp.” Gow has, Aleinikoff said, made a full recovery.

CNN —College athletes could soon get dramatically different paychecks. The lawsuitThe House v. NCAA lawsuit was filed by Grant House and Sedona Prince, two college athletes, against the NCAA and the Power 5 conferences – the Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, Southeastern and Atlantic Coast – in US District Court Northern District of California Oakland Division in 2020. But college athletes in the House lawsuit say current NIL rules and an “anticompetitive” college system hurt their chances to make money. The possible settlement comes against a backdrop of attitudes toward college athletes receiving payments gradually changing. Earlier this year, members of the Dartmouth College men’s basketball team became the first college athletes to vote to join a union, a significant milestone in the rapidly changing business for collegiate sports.

It has since emerged that the attacker had been ordered to leave Belgium in 2021. Bernard Clerfayt, a Brussels minister who is also the mayor of the Brussels borough where the killings took place, called for de Moor's resignation. Official figures showed that only 5,497 of the 25,292 people who received an order to leave Belgium in 2022 have respected it. Despite the attack, Belgium is one of the better performers when it comes to deportation. Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren perform at UBS Arena on April 11, 2023 in Elmont, New York. Bruce Springsteen will not be able to perform for the rest of this year, the rock icon announced Wednesday, as he continues to fight peptic ulcer disease. "Bruce Springsteen has continued to recover steadily from peptic ulcer disease over the past few weeks and will continue treatment through the rest of the year on doctor's advice," according to a statement from Springsteen and his E Street Band. Peptic ulcer disease is the wearing away of the stomach lining, which can be asymptomatic or cause debilitating pain. Those suffering from peptic ulcer disease are usually told to cut back on their use of pain medication and limit alcohol consumption.

REUTERS/Marton Monus Acquire Licensing RightsVARPALOTA, Hungary, Sept 1 (Reuters) - A derelict power plant in Hungary came back to life on Thursday, powered by music and light shows as thousands of festival-goers marvelled at its three huge cooling towers dominating the starry late summer sky. The INOTA coal-fired thermal plant, built in the 1950s during the Communist era and once one of the country's largest industrial sites, was shut down in 2001. Hilda Carlsson, 33, said she and her friends travelled from Sweden largely to see Frahm at the INOTA festival. The INOTA plant featured in the epic 2017 American dystopian movie "Blade Runner 2049", starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, which was partly filmed in Hungary.

London CNN —If you’re looking for a rock ‘n’ roll end to the summer, then the Rolling Stones may have you covered. The British rock legends appear to have teased a new album through a fake ad for a glass-repair business placed in a local London newspaper. Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones perform in Sweden on July 31, 2022 during their "Stones Sixty European Tour." A new album would be the Stones’ 31st studio album and their first since the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts. A Rolling Stones representative contacted by CNN declined to comment on the ad.

An ‘Oppenheimer’ Reading List

Rhodes’s Pulitzer-winning book has been having a renaissance among people grappling with the potential destructive force of other new technologies. Writing in The Atlantic, Charlie Warzel called it “a kind of holy text for a certain type of A.I. researcher — namely, the type who believes their creations might have the power to kill us all.”Long before “Oppenheimer,” a different portrayal of atomic science captured my imagination. (I think it works best as a live play, but if you’re looking for streaming options, the BBC did make a television version starring Daniel Craig in 2002 and a radio version starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Simon Russell Beale in 2013.) But inside, readers found that the entire thing was devoted to one single article: “Hiroshima,” by John Hersey.

Germany to unveil first-ever National Security Strategy

BERLIN, June 13 (Reuters) - Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government is set to unveil Germany's first National Security Strategy on Wednesday which aims to provide an overview of the country's foreign policy and ensure a cohesive cross-ministry approach to security. Germany has had policy documents in the past addressing security but Scholz's three-way coalition agreed it wanted a more comprehensive strategy in its pact in November 2021. Scholz said Germany from now on would invest more than 2% of economic output on defence up from around 1.5% currently, after years of resisting pleas from NATO allies to do so - a pledge expected to be included in the National Security Strategy. The document is unlikely to go into Germany's policy on China at length, however, as the government is expected to publish a separate China strategy later this year. One of the most contentious issues was the idea of a National Security Council, which the government eventually abandoned due to disagreements over where it should be housed.

ECB’s crisis tool works best if it’s never used

BRUSSELS, May 30 (Reuters Breakingviews) - In the euro zone bond market, unlimited backstops are the cheapest. The European Central Bank has been trumpeting its ability to buy member states’ debt if it comes under attack from investors. The danger here is that too much divergence would lead the euro zone to fracture, creating a powder keg for crisis. The central bank has been deliberately quiet about exactly when and how it might activate the crisis tool, except to say it will be ready if necessary. They have noted that the euro zone central bank has a new instrument to combat any sharp increase in the differential between yields of euro zone government bonds.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic pledged to "practically disarm" his country, with the government quickly launching a month-long amnesty for illegal weapons. Political opponents - who have long demanded tighter arms controls - call the move a populist step that cannot solve Serbia's illegal weapons problem, while organising mass protests against the violence they say permeates society. Prices of illegal weapons on the 1990s black market in Serbia were as low as $10 for a hand grenade and $150 for an assault rifle, and many were smuggled outside the country. Between 2012 and 2016 Serbia registered a total of 10,061 gun-related crimes, neighbouring Albania 6,815 and Bosnia 5,616, SEESAC's data shows. Duquet said that while the situation in Serbia was not comparable to the United States, which has far more frequent mass shootings, the country's latest attempt to disarm may form a useful precedent closer to home as war rages again in Europe.
