As Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin closes in on Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record, the Great One told CNBC he has nothing but admiration for the player who could soon dethrone him. Thirty-five years later, Ovechkin is closing in on breaking Gretzky's record of 894 goals, with 26 more to go. Gretzky told CNBC that at the time he broke Howe's all-time scoring record, he felt embarrassed to end his idol's milestone. The pay limit has been in place since the end of a labor dispute that caused the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 NHL season. Sports business experts said the strict salary cap has helped the league's financial health since the full season stoppage. The hard salary cap is a stark difference from Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association, which have no salary cap and a soft salary cap, respectively. But the hard cap means NHL teams have to be especially diligent. The NHL is planning to start negotiations with the NHLPA in early 2025, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at this year's NHL Board of Governors meeting.

The National Hockey League is commanding more respect when it comes to team values. The average NHL team is worth $1.92 billion, according to CNBC's Official 2024 NHL Valuations, and recent transactions come at revenue multiples that rival deals done in Major League Baseball. For the 2023-24 season, the NHL's hockey-related revenue was $6.3 billion, 8.6% higher than the previous season, according to the league. The NHL also hit record national sponsorship revenue last season, bringing in $250 million, as well as record regular-season gate receipt revenue of $2.4 billion, the NHL said. The average NHL team posted EBITDA of $45 million on revenue of $223 million for the 2023-24 season, according to CNBC calculations.

The Tampa Bay Lightning's ownership group is expanding. Vinik Sports Group, run by titan investor Jeff Vinik, is selling a portion of the National Hockey League team to a group of investors led by Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz. As part of the Lightning deal announced Thursday, Arctos Partners will also sell a portion of its ownership and remain a minority stakeholder. Vinik acquired the Lightning in 2010 for a reported $110 million and since then has invested billions in real estate development in downtown Tampa Bay.

Diamond Sports said in the filing that if it is able to emerge from bankruptcy protection, FanDuel will be a "long-term naming rights partner." The new naming rights agreement would also give FanDuel the right to buy up to 5% of equity in the reorganized company and get performance warrants for up to 5% of equity. A naming rights deal was later signed with gaming company Bally's Corp . Some NBA teams that have left the regional sports networks have turned to local broadcast stations to air local games.

The complaint also says that in 2019, the company introduced "two new dangerous features": a live-streaming feature called TikTok LIVE and a virtual currency system called TikTok "Coins." TikTok incentivizes users to go LIVE by promising these monetary rewards 'the more popular [their] content becomes.'" The suit says that TikTok "earns substantial revenue" from its Coins, charging commissions of up to 50% on each transaction.

Gutierrez had previously been a managing director at private equity firm Clearlake Capital Group and knew Meruelo for about a decade before becoming the NHL's first-ever Latino CEO. It took a Latino owner to hire a Latino CEO, Gutierrez explained in an interview, because Hispanics are not well-represented in leadership positions in professional sports. Gutierrez, who is technically still CEO of the Arizona Coyotes even though the franchise is inactive, says he is the only non-owner Latino CEO. Gutierrez and Pedro Antonio Guerrero, the CEO of executive advancement company Guerrero Media, introduced Latinos in Sports at an event in Miami last week.
