CNN —The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are departing for their Week 6 matchup early in order to avoid the expected landfall of Hurricane Milton in Tampa, Florida. Milton has reached speeds of 175 mph and was classed as a Category 5 hurricane on Monday, but has dipped back into Category 4 status. It is the strongest hurricane to occur anywhere on the planet this year and one of the 10 strongest (tied for ninth) hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic. The hurricane is expected to fluctuate in intensity before ultimately making landfall on Wednesday as a Category 3 storm. “Milton is still a relatively compact hurricane, but the wind field is expected to continue to grow in size as it approaches Florida.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baker Mayfield is staying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after agreeing to a three-year contract worth up to $115 million, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement, which includes $50 million guaranteed, had not been finalized. The Tampa Bay Times reported Mayfield will receive $30 million in 2024 and $30 million in 2025, with $20 million guaranteed in the second year of the deal. Mayfield agreed to terms two days after Tampa Bay finalized a two-year, $52 million contract with star receiver Mike Evans, who also passed up an opportunity to test his worth in free agency. The Bucs are also interested in extending the contract of left tackle Tristan Wirfs, who's due to earn a fifth-year option salary of $18.2 million next season.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to hire Kentucky assistant coach Liam Coen to be their offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. Coen would replace Dave Canales, who left to become Carolina’s head coach after one season in Tampa Bay. Coen, who was the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, spent the 2022 season as the offensive coordinator for the Rams, where Baker Mayfield made four starts. Mayfield revived his career with Canales and the Buccaneers, leading them to an NFC South title and a playoff win. He’s set to become a free agent, and reuniting with Coen increases Tampa Bay’s opportunity to re-sign him.

Stroud in the Precision Passing skills challenge, helping the NFC build a 12-6 lead over the AFC on the opening night of the 2024 Pro Bowl Games. It’s the second year for a revamped format that replaced the traditional Pro Bowl tackle football game last winter in Las Vegas. Opening night skills winners each earned three points that count toward their team’s overall score. The Pro Bowl Games conclude Sunday with more skill events, as well as the flag game, which consists of four, 12-minute quarters played on a 50-yard field. ATLANTA (AP) — With Bill Belichick set for a second interview, the Atlanta Falcons have talked with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn about their vacant head coaching job. The Falcons announced Friday they had completed a virtual interview with Glenn, who has led the Lions' defense for the past three seasons. Glenn became the ninth candidate to interview with the Falcons, but all eyes were on Belichick amid reports that he was the team's top choice and had flown into Atlanta on one of owner Arthur Blank's private jets for a second interview. The Falcons confirmed they were meeting further with Belichick, but said no additional details would be provided until the follow-up interview was completed. For good measure, Belichick was a part of two more championship teams while working on the New York Giants' staff under Bill Parcells.
