Police arrested a naked man in the crawl space underneath the El Sereno, California, home of a 93-year-old woman Friday morning. The unsettling incident took place after the woman and her family had reported hearing strange noises for weeks. Calmer winds helped California firefighters battle the once out-of-control Mountain Fire on Friday as they continued to defend homes from the destructive blaze, officials said. Evacuation orders have been lifted for at least two communities near the Mountain Fire in Ventura County, sheriff’s Sgt. One person was detained Sunday after three people died in a house fire in Temple City. Firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were sent to the home in the 6000 block of Sultana Avenue at around 4:50 p.m. and were able to knock down the fire in 30 minutes. But due to a “heavy heat” from the flames, three people died, the department said. “Unfortunately they arrived to heavy smoke and fire showing from the front of the building,” Fred Fielding with the LA County Fire Department said. “I saw the whole house inside was full on fire -- fire coming out of the windows,” said Jane Guzman De Leon, who called 911.

A Southern California man is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting nine women, one of whom died, prosecutors said. Michael DiGiorgio, 50, has been charged with murder, three felony counts of rape by use of a drug in connection to events that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office say happened at his homes in Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach. He was arrested Thursday morning by Redondo Beach police and remains in jail, NBC Los Angeles reported. “I extend my deepest sympathy to the victims, whose lives have been irrevocably changed and the life lost by the alleged brutal acts of the offender,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. “Our office is committed to holding him accountable for the pain and trauma he has inflicted.”

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has reached a historic $880 million settlement over hundreds of child sex abuse claims. The agreement in principle announced Wednesday settles 1,354 child sexual abuse claims, the plaintiffs’ attorney said in a news release. It is the largest single child sex abuse settlement with a Catholic archdiocese. In 2007, the archdiocese settled child sex abuse lawsuits with 500 victims for $660 million. No designated donations to parishes or schools will be used to finance the settlement, the archdiocese said in a statement issued after the settlement announcement.

The gunman who shot a longtime Santa Monica College employee is dead following a pursuit that ended in a standoff in El Segundo, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. Police say 39-year-old Davon Durell Dean, a Santa Monica College employee, shot his coworker Monday night on campus. At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect’s car was located in El Segundo. As a result of the standoff, access to Aviation Boulevard between 124th Street and El Segundo Boulevard was closed. In wake of the on-campus shooting, Santa Monica College said counseling and mental/emotional support services would be provided to students and faculty who have been impacted.

Nearly 70 people who belong to or are associated with a white supremacist gang in the San Fernando Valley were indicted on federal charges, authorities announced Wednesday, saying the multi-agency operation was Los Angeles’ largest ever takedown of an extremist group. The San Fernando Valley gang is also affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood and Mexican Mafia prison gang, authorities claimed. The alleged gang members have committed acts of violence against minorities cross the state, according to an FBI official. Those arrested Wednesday were expected to make initial appearances in federal court and to be held in jail with no bail. The federal racketeering charges can lead to lengthy prison terms up to life in prison for those convicted.

Prosecutors filed murder, kidnapping, robbery, and carjacking charges Monday against the man suspected of hijacking an LA Metro bus last week, murdering a passenger, and leading police on an hour-long chase through downtown Los Angeles. He was riding the Metro bus to commute home from his job at Dodger Stadium when it was commandeered. Several other passengers on the bus were described in court papers filed Monday as victims of various crimes that occurred during the hijacking. LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who also chairs the Metro transit system board of directors, said crime that occurs on the Metro system is often a reflection of what goes on in the communities it serves. “But when it happens on a Metro bus or a train, it obviously becomes national news,” Hahn said.

A brush fire in San Bernardino County has destroyed several homes in the area, according to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. Named the Edgehill Fire, it ignited Monday at 2:38 p.m. local time, according to Cal Fire. When firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire in the 3300 block of Beverly Drive on Little Mountain, it was only about an acre big and "rapidly moving," San Bernardino County Fire Protection District said. An evacuation order was issued for people living in parts of San Bernardino County, including on the south side of Ridge Line Drive and on the north side of Edgehill Road, per the fire protection district.
