Bashir wears an Erdem floral-printed bra top, Erdem skirt, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, Old Jewelry earrings along with her own bracelet and ring. "Part of building a business was going out and sharing what you were doing with the world," Bashir says. For years Bashir's startup had been building muscle around these capabilities; now it had an eager audience. Eating at acclaimed restaurants is fine, but Bashir prefers the more-intimate affairs at tech executives' homes because, she says, "you can stay longer."

CNN —German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier apologized Wednesday for colonial-era atrocities committed by German forces in Tanzania during a visit to the East African country. Tanganyika, now present-day Tanzania, was first a German colony before coming under British control in 1919. Steinmeier told the Mbano family in Tanzania that his country would work towards finding Mbano’s remains, which may have been transported to Europe by German troops for burial after his execution. “I promise that we will work together with you to find Chief Songea’s skull in Germany,” the German president added. Steinmeier also traveled to Zambia Wednesday, with both visits aimed at fostering partnerships, according to the German government.

German invaders pillaged thousands of skulls from East African colonies and brought them back. Using DNA analysis, a museum has managed to find relat of three of the skulls. These are thought to have belonged to indigenous Nama and Herero tribes who were killed in brutal wars by German invaders almost a century earlier, Science Magazine reported in 2011. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn the case of eight of the skulls, the museum collected enough information to seek out potential relatives. But we do know Meli met a brutal end when he was hanged and decapitated after leading an uprising against German invaders in 1900, per the BBC.

The orange juice was also a little pulpy and separated overnight—a common occurrence with both centrifugal juicers we tested. Others you should know aboutGreat multiuse juicerKuvings’s 4-in-1 masticating juicer comes with attachments to make smoothies, sorbets and nut milks, too. Masticating juicers use a rotating, screw-shaped augur to crush and press fresh produce to extract juice, while centrifugal juicers rely on a high-speed spinning metal blade to pulverize produce into a mesh filter. Masticating juicers are slower and cost more, but often have higher yields and are therefore less wasteful (which we found to be true in our testing). Centrifugal juicers are faster and more powerful, but create foamier juice that’s more likely to separate.

The NewsAfter months of speculation, Chloé said its creative director, Gabriela Hearst, was leaving the French fashion house after a three-year tenure. Why It Matters: Chloé was vying to become a beacon of sustainable fashionMs. Hearst, a Uruguay-born designer of women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, founded her namesake luxury label in New York in 2015 before joining Chloé in December 2020. To many observers the combination of Ms. Hearst and Chloé appeared to be a savvy match. But rumors throughout 2023 indicated that Ms. Hearst and Chloé might part ways, in part because of pressures placed on the designer by her trans-Atlantic schedule. Throughout her tenure, Ms. Hearst continued to run her New York-based business while leading the Chloé design studio in Paris.

Irish 'bad bank' NAMA eyes boost to 4.5 billion euros surplus
  + stars: | 2023-06-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Set up in 2009, the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) used 32 billion euros ($35.10 billion) of debt to rid banks of 74 billion euros worth of risky property loans following a banking collapse. The Irish government also had to pour tens of billions of euros more into the country's ailing banks, some of which still collapsed. NAMA had raised its forecast surplus almost every year since 2015 following a surge in demand for Irish real estate. It had a residual portfolio worth 500 million euros at the end of 2022, its annual report published on Thursday said. McDonagh added that 400 apartments from the 1,800 units NAMA had funding approved a year ago fell through after demand from investors in the private rented sector "almost disappeared" in the rising interest rate environment.

REUTERS/Mohammed SalemGAZA, June 6 (Reuters) - Large paintings of a bear, an elephant and a giraffe decorate the outer walls of NAMA Zoo in Gaza City, but none of these wild creatures is represented live among those caged inside. There were once six zoos in Gaza, a narrow coastal enclave which has been closed off behind security walls since 2007. The original animals at the zoo were smuggled through tunnels from Egypt over a decade ago. Gaza lacks the medical facilities to treat animals like lions and tigers.

WASHINGTON, May 18 (Reuters) - Our species arose in Africa more than 300,000 years ago, with the oldest-known Homo sapiens fossils discovered at a site in Morocco called Jebel Irhoud, located between Marrakech and the Atlantic coast. A new study tapping into genome data from modern-day African populations is offering insight into how this may have unfolded. The research indicated that multiple ancestral groups from across Africa contributed to the emergence of Homo sapiens in a patchwork manner, migrating from one region to another and mixing with one another over hundreds of thousands of years. The findings did not support a longstanding hypothesis that a single region in Africa gave rise to Homo sapiens or a scenario involving mixture with an unidentified closely related species in the human evolutionary lineage within Africa. "By building models of how these transmissions occurred, we can test detailed models that relate past populations to present-day populations."
WINDHOEK, Nov 23 (Reuters) - A large crane lifted a colonial-era statue of German official Curt von Francois in Namibian capital Windhoek on Wednesday, as a crowd that gathered nearby clapped and hooted in delight. The 2.4 metre (7-foot, 9-inch) bronze statue of von Francois was unveiled in 1965 during the 75-year anniversary celebrations of Windhoek. The controversial statue was seen as a symbol of colonial oppression in the southern African nation, and is the latest to be taken down as activists around the world mount campaigns for their removals.
