Last year, China was the leading car supplier to Mexico, exporting $4.6 billion worth of vehicles to the country, according to the Mexican Ministry of Economy. "The Chinese automakers came to the country very aggressively," said Juan Carlos Baker, former Mexican deputy minister for international trade. That free trade access is part of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a revised iteration of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that removed tariffs on many goods traded between the North American countries starting in 2018. "We've seen China do this in other types of manufacturing as well, from appliances to auto parts to steel," said Paul. Before last week’s Republican convention, Donald Trump seemed to be moving away from the populism that characterized his 2016 campaign. “He’s defending big business, cozying up to billionaires, and wooing C.E.O.s.”When Mr. Trump named Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate, though, pundits quickly concluded that he was doubling down on populism. Could President Biden, who claims to have labor-friendly policies, be the one to turn the tide by appealing to the White working class and giving his party a much-needed electoral boost in the process? The U.S. Trade Representative said on Aug. 7 it had asked Mexico to see whether workers "are being denied the rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining" at the privately held company's facility, which makes electrical components for autos for Japan-based Yazaki Corp.Mexico's labor ministry and Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration "determined that there is no substantial evidence of employer interference or denial of rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining by the company," the labor and economy ministries said in a joint statement.
