The FBI is investigating previous reports of dozens of racist texts sent to Black Americans telling them they have been “selected" to pick cotton "at the nearest plantation" immediately following last week's election. The initial reports of racist texts last week included recipients who attend universities from California to South Carolina, with some sent via TextNow, a service compatible with untraceable, “burner” phone numbers. The FBI on Friday said the texts from the initial reports were not identical but seemed to follow similar themes. Outrage has followed the release of a video from a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania that seemed to depict Vice President Kamala Harris tied to a golf cart carrying a man wearing a mask of former President Donald Trump. The float moved along a main street in Mount Pleasant, a town of about 4,000 people located 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. A video appeared to show a woman dressed as Harris with her hands tied at the Halloween parade Wednesday. The fire department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News or share who did the float belong to. Missouri is set Tuesday to execute Marcellus Williams, a death row inmate whose case has spurred several efforts to save his life amid doubts about the evidence presented at his 2001 murder trial and the actions of a trial lawyer in the case. The attorneys are asking for the court to either find that those actions violated Williams’ rights or have a lower court address those issues. A St. Louis County circuit judge and Gayle’s family also agreed to the deal, but state Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, opposed it, and the state Supreme Court agreed. A judge ultimately rejected the motion to vacate, a ruling Williams’ attorneys appealed to the state Supreme Court in the hearing Monday. In addition to the state Supreme Court appeal, Williams’ attorneys also have an appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court and a clemency request before Missouri Gov.

An unidentified Gettysburg College student who allegedly carved a racial epithet on the chest of a teammate is no longer enrolled at the Pennsylvania liberal arts college, the school said over the weekend. "We can report now that the individual who scratched a slur onto another person is no longer enrolled at the College," the parties stated. A spokesperson for the college confirmed it, saying the alleged perpetrator and victim were suspended from the swim team pending the outcome of an investigation. On Friday, The Gettysburgian published a statement from the victim's family. The victim’s family said he was the only person of color at the gathering and that the alleged perpetrator was a trusted friend of his.

Williams’ team filed a clemency petition to the US Supreme Court last week, noting Missouri’s previous governor had postponed Williams’ execution indefinitely amid questions about the integrity of Williams’ trial. Eric Greitens previously halted Williams’ execution and formed a board to investigate his case and determine whether he should be granted clemency. “The Board investigated Williams’ case for the next six years — until Governor Michael Parson abruptly terminated the process,” Williams’ attorneys wrote. “The Governor’s actions have violated Williams’ constitutional rights and created an exceptionally urgent need for the Court’s attention,” Williams’ attorneys said in court documents.
