“Any disputes Musk has with his critics should play out in the court of public opinion, not a court of law,” Terr said. Musk and representatives at X did not respond to requests for comment on his calls for prosecution. Musk and X have sometimes found allies among members of Congress or state attorneys general who have launched investigations. “The First Amendment obviously protects both Musk and his critics in making public pronouncements about each other,” he said in an email. The feud between Musk and the Center for Countering Digital Hate has continued.

He has given more than $118 million to a pro-Trump super PAC and hit the campaign trail to stump for Trump in Pennsylvania. CCDH’s research is based on an analysis of publicly available data from X about Musk’s own posts and spending by political campaigns to promote ads on the platform. The nonprofit tallied up how many views Musk received on 87 specific posts that contained false claims about the 2024 election that were debunked by fact-checkers. The 2024 election is the first presidential cycle with the platform under Musk’s control since his takeover of the company formerly known as Twitter two years ago. Based on that information, Ahmed’s group determined that Musk’s election-related posts – boosting Trump and slamming Vice President Kamala Harris – were worth about $24 million.

Why can’t we stop calling X, Twitter?

While some people (mainly fans of Musk) have embraced the X brand, most have not. Many people, both online and in person, still call the platform Twitter, and refer to posts as tweets. WHY ARE WE STILL CALLING THIS PLATFORM TWITTER. Even when you do see X, it's framed as "X, formerly Twitter". So the brand is what they say it is… it’s not that customers can’t stop calling it Twitter, it’s that they won’t.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A judge has ordered Elon Musk to testify for a third time as part of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s investigation into his $44 billion purchase of Twitter, now called X, in 2022. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler issued an order Saturday giving Musk, his team and the SEC a week to agree on a date and location for Musk’s testimony. Beeler said, however, that the court is enforcing the SEC's subpoena and that the testimony is “not unduly burdensome” for Musk. The SEC had given Musk the option to testify in Texas, where he lives. The SEC and a lawyer for Musk did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on Monday.

But on the eve of the caucuses, DeSantis is on the brink in a state where he’s banked his entire campaign. Big donors soon discovered that the Florida governor could be a flat and uninspiring candidate. It was a cringeworthy moment that could become a pitiful emblem of busted hopes if the Florida governor doesn’t mount a comeback on Monday. “If the number that we have is anywhere close to reality, he’s going to have a very, very good night,” Vander Plaats said. An Iowa defeat for DeSantis would be especially bitter, because after months on the trail, he’s a far more polished candidate.

Washington CNN —Elon Musk is an increasingly important player in global affairs and has been touring the world to meet with political leaders in recent months. “We can observe Elon Musk’s Twitter/X activity that he regularly consumes right-wing content and this increased during COVID-19,” Facciani said in an email. More recently, however, Musk’s ambitions have come a bit closer to earth and become far more concrete. There are many world leaders who hold extreme or far-right views, of course. Musk’s outbursts that contradict widely held international norms and values are meant for a specific internet audience that Musk mistakes for being representative of the wider world.

They wanted it to be everything most social media struggles to be: positive, safe and inclusive. And as the user base of the platform now known as X splinters, so does Black Twitter, the community of Black users that was a big part of Twitter’s growth and culture. Legacy social media platforms have repeatedly failed to anticipate how their products might be manipulated or misused until something goes wrong. Alphonzo Terrell, co-founder of the social media app Spill, demonstrates how the platform works during an interview with CNN. CNNEven with AI content moderation models, other social media companies often fail to catch harmful content that makes it onto their platforms.

Here’s a (non-exhaustive) account of how Musk has fundamentally changed Twitter since he made one of the most consequential acquisitions of the social media age. Many of Musk’s content and product decisions have also led to what civil society groups have reported as a troubling spread of hateful speech on the platform. He recommended that X users monitor the Israel-Hamas conflict by following an account known for spreading disinformation, before later deleting his post. And, in an attempt to prove that former Twitter executives deliberately discriminated against conservatives on the platform, Musk provided a handpicked group of journalists with selective access to company records. It is perhaps Musk’s all-consuming presence that has most undermined what users used to love about Twitter.

The Real Story of Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover

In April 2022, things were going surprisingly well for Elon Musk. Tesla stock had risen 15-fold in five years, making it worth more than the next nine auto companies combined. SpaceX in the first quarter of 2022 launched twice as much mass into orbit as all other companies and countries combined. Its Starlink satellites had just succeeded in creating a privately owned internet, providing connectivity to 500,000 subscribers in 40 countries, including Ukraine.

The will-they-or-won’t-they drama between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg over a potential “cage fight” appeared on Sunday to end with a whimper, as Mr. Zuckerberg said that Mr. Musk’s delays and excuses had rendered the discussion moot. In a post to his nascent social-networking platform, Threads, Mr. Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Meta, wrote, “I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on.” He included the hint of a taunt, “If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me.”Mr. Zuckerberg’s message seemingly ended the suspense around a stranger-than-fiction summer of tension between the technology titans. Less than two months ago, Mr. Musk mused that he was “up for a cage match.” That was just before Instagram, owned by Meta, introduced Threads as a competitor to Mr. Musk’s Twitter (now renamed “X”). Whether or not he was serious at the time, intermediaries between the men began sketching out the contours of a match. Both executives continued to fan the flames; Mr. Zuckerberg posted photographs of himself shirtless in training, and Mr. Musk said in posts on X that the event could happen in Italy.

Across the country, in Silicon Valley, the situation isn’t quite as good. For decades Silicon Valley has been a dominant contributor to the US economy and an integral part of the country’s culture. Bankruptcy filings…less so.”Pitchbook and The National Venture Capital Association’s most recent report on the industry also takes a pessimistic view of the situation. What it means: While startups are certainly far from extinct, there has been a serious culling in Silicon Valley that will likely continue on for some time. Just 19% of venture capital deals were made with startups based in the Bay Area this year; that’s down from 22% in 2020.

Elizabeth Warren asks SEC to investigate Tesla

New York CNN —Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren asked the SEC to investigate Tesla and its board of directors to determine whether they violated securities laws after CEO Elon Musk took over Twitter last year. Warren wrote that that disorder has spilled over into Musk’s management of one of the most influential electric car companies in the United States. “Tesla is publicly owned, and Mr. Musk and the Board have responsibilities to shareholders and the public in their management of the company,” Warren wrote. “These close relationships may explain the board’s persistent inability or unwillingness to address the concerns posed by Mr. Musk’s actions,” Warren wrote. Last December, the Democratic senator wrote Tesla shareholders may be hurt by its CEO’s ownership of Twitter in a letter to company chair Robyn Denholm.

It alleges that Twitter made repeated assurances to employees about its severance plan amid Musk’s takeover in an effort to retain workers. In particular, the complaint claims that Twitter had promised senior employees severance of six months of base pay plus one week for every year of service, in addition to other benefits. In response to a request for comment on the lawsuit, Twitter sent CNN an automated poop emoji. The lawsuit is just the latest legal action brought against Twitter by former employees with severance-related claims. More than 1,500 former employees have filed arbitration claims, after Twitter pushed for anyone who had signed an arbitration agreement while working at the company to pursue their claims out of court.

CNN —When Elon Musk took over Twitter in October and began upending the platform, there weren’t many viable alternatives for frustrated users. ThreadsThreads is Meta’s long-anticipated answer to Twitter and the biggest threat to the social network Musk bought for $44 billion. And Zuckerberg isn’t just looking to catch up to Twitter; he wants to build a service that’s far larger. Spill has also emerged as a haven for Black Twitter users and marginalized communities seeking a safe space online. BlueskyBluesky, a service backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, looks identical to Twitter, with one key difference.

New York CNN —At the start of last year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was in the hot seat. But then, the attention of lawmakers, media and the tech world writ large abruptly shifted to another tech billionaire: Elon Musk. While Twitter users have lamented what Musk’s ownership has meant for the platform, it may be the best thing that could have happened for Zuckerberg. A billion-user opportunityThe distraction and chaos of Musk’s Twitter takeover could hardly have come at a better time for Zuckerberg and Meta. The Twitter-Threads battle has raised the stakes for another fight: a cage fight that Musk and Zuckerberg have spent the past several weeks planning.

Washington CNN —In less than 48 hours, Meta’s Twitter rival Threads has surpassed 70 million sign-ups, upended the social media landscape and appears to have rattled Twitter enough that it is now threatening legal action against Meta. By promoting Threads through Instagram, and by sharing Instagram user data with Threads to let people instantly recreate their social networks, Meta has significantly greased the onboarding process. The issue isn’t limited to the realm of social media. Rather than viewing it through the lens of a social media market, one helpful way to look at the issue is from the perspective of the advertising market, he said. That could lead to further antitrust scrutiny for Meta even if the question about competition in social media is ambiguous.

Has Zuckerberg invented a Twitter killer? Meta’s new social network had already racked up more than 10 million sign-ups within seven hours of its launch, and attracted celebrities and politicians like Oprah Winfrey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York. But the presence of big-name advertisers such as Procter & Gamble and Ford points to the bigger commercial stakes in the fight between Mark Zuckerberg’s new platform and Elon Musk’s Twitter. Meta is billing Threads as a “friendly” forum, but the social media giant is gunning for the blue bird. Advertisers are watching closely, even if they can’t buy ads there yet.

Meta Platforms ' (META) new social media app is set to rival Twitter at a time when the Elon Musk-owned microblogging app is facing fresh upheaval. Meta's latest social networking app, Threads , is expected to go live Thursday, according to Apple's App Store. Twitter users have responded angrily to Musk's latest restrictions on the platform, and many appear to be looking for new alternatives — potentially making Zuckerberg's Threads an attractive option for disgruntled Twitter users. Bottom line We couldn't think of any company other than Meta Platforms, under the leadership of Zuckerberg, to take on Twitter. DeSantis had granted Musk his first official 2024 interview, snubbing Murdoch’s Fox News in the process for the prized media appearance. Reporter breaks down how Twitter is seizing Fox News' conservative momentum 01:09 - Source: CNNBut Wednesday’s events proved that to be far from the case, with Musk’s Twitter Spaces event being marred by embarrassing technical glitches. The sound repeatedly cut in and out, ultimately leading to Musk ending the Spaces event and starting a fresh one under Sacks’ account. Once the second Twitter Spaces finally got going, DeSantis, Musk, and Sacks predictably trained their attention on bashing the establishment press. It was something of great irony to listen to: A Twitter Spaces event centered on attacking legacy media while simultaneously failing horribly at replicating what legacy media outlets do on a daily basis.
A new CEO won’t fix Twitter’s biggest problem
  + stars: | 2023-05-17 | by ( Clare Duffy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
New York CNN —During his six months as Twitter’s CEO and owner, Elon Musk decimated its ad business, alienated some news publications and VIP users, and plunged the platform into a constant state of chaos. But she may struggle to address Twitter’s biggest problem: Elon Musk. On Tuesday, Musk said he “didn’t care” if his controversial tweets drew the ire of Twitter advertisers or Tesla shareholders. She may struggle to undo the damage Elon Musk has done to the company's ad business. That could only add to the difficulty Yaccarino will face in shoring up Twitter’s business.
