“Queer” — releasing in the U.S. with A24 — world premiered in Venice to positive reviews. After the festival, Mubi acquired the film for multiple territories, including the U.K., Ireland, Canada, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Benelux, Spain, Turkey and India and all rights excluding theatrical in Italy. This ban not only targets a single film but also undermines the very essence and purpose of the festival. For this reason, MUBI has decided to take the position that our audience expects from us. It is with deep regret that we inform you of our decision to cancel the entire MUBI Fest Istanbul.

Demi Moore gives the wildest performance of her career in French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat's provocative new movie "The Substance." "The Substance" centers on Elisabeth Sparkle (Moore), a former A-lister whose career is on the decline. They can't survive separately because with Elisabeth dead, there's no more stabilizer fluid, and without stabilizer fluid, Sue can't continue to exist. So Sue's body (while she's en route to the big New Year's Eve performance) starts deteriorating: her teeth begin coming out, and a nail pops off. The monster rips down a photo of Elisabeth's younger face and tapes it on, then dolls itself up with carefully placed earrings and some makeup.

CNN —After a first intervention for the fashion house’s seismic creative director John Galliano failed, Dior’s then-CEO Sidney Toledano staged a second, more serious one. In response, as Toledano recounts in the new documentary “High & Low: John Galliano,” the then-50-year-old gym-obsessive ripped open his shirt to reveal a rippling torso and said, “Does this look like the body of an alcoholic?”And so the designer’s drinking and pill-popping rolled on. At least, “High & Low” director Kevin Macdonald, whose documentary performs a thrilling autopsy of Galliano’s career collapse, thinks so. Once upon a time, we were promised a movie lover’s utopia: a streaming universe where any movie you could want would be available at the click of a button. The high-profile subscription streaming services (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Max, Hulu and others) have slowly decreased the volume of their cinematic catalogs to spend more heavily on original films. (They’ve now taken to deleting those originals, or not streaming them at all, for tax benefits.) We begin with Mubi, which is one of the older streaming services, beginning in 2007 as the Auteurs and partnering with the Criterion Collection the next year as a video-on-demand platform. Regardless of the turnaround, the selection is wide — a Mubi representative pegged its current library at more than 750 titles.

CNN —Molly Manning Walker learned she was a two-time BAFTA nominee at the unholy hour of 5 AM. That’s not to say Manning Walker is a world apart from the young subjects of her film. The film, Manning Walker’s first feature, was a hit at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it won top prize in the Un Certain Regard competition. Courtesy MUBICNN: For better or for worse, there’s a lot about “How To Have Sex” that’s distinctly British. “How to Have Sex” is not didactic, however, which is what makes it so effective. And it starts out so fun, like a more innocent and realistic “Spring Breakers.”Parties on screen rarely feel as fun as they’re supposed to — the joy often looks a little forced. This is something Skye makes her feel self-conscious about while also trying to push her to get rid of on the trip. There is a hard turning point when things stop being fun in “How to Have Sex,” when one morning Tara is missing from both hotel rooms. “How to Have Sex,” a MUBI release in select North American theaters Friday, has not been rated by the Motion Picture Association.

Introduced in 1998 when Netflix first launched, the DVD service promised an easier rental experience than having to drive to the nearest Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. McEvoy has remained faithful to Netflix’s DVD service so he can keep watching Bollywood and obscure independent films not often found on streaming services. Bill Rouhana, the CEO of Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment – which owns DVD rental service Redbox – told The Hollywood Reporter in April he hoped to purchase Netflix’s DVD business. Still, he said, he’s “sad” to see Netflix’s DVD service depart. “I absolutely would not have been able to find all of those movies [I’ve watched] if not for the Netflix DVD service,” he said.

But in 2007, Netflix began streaming content online, and gradually shifted the focus away from its original DVD business. Colin McEvoy is one of the holdouts still using Netflix's DVD service despite the mainstream adoption of streaming services. But I didn’t want it to end if I could help it.”Other DVD subscribers are hoping there may still be a happy ending. For now, at least, some DVD subscribers plan to focus on watching as many DVDs as they can before the service goes away. “I absolutely would not have been able to find all of those movies if not for the Netflix DVD service,” he said.
Director Park is no stranger to the slippery nature of language barriers. In the film, Korean detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) is probing the death of a climber who fell from a mountaintop on the outskirts of Busan. Director Park Chan-wook says he had a longstanding desire to cast the Chinese star in one of his films. The first part is “full-on male gaze,” Hae-joon “steal(ing) the look.” He inserts himself into Seo-rae’s life, even fantasizing standing in her living room, observing private moments. This month the spotlight is on South Korean crime drama “Decision To Leave.”CNN —A language barrier lies at the heart of swoon-worthy Korean police procedural “Decision To Leave.” Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) is a polite Busan cop, Seo-rae (Tang Wei), the Chinese wife of a dead businessman. For more details on his “very meta approach,” why he cast Tang Wei and why “Vertigo” was far from his mind, read the full interview.
