The insects will infiltrate a much bigger geographical area than similar occurrences in most years because they’re part of the dual emergence of two particular periodical cicada broods. Although the full-scale emergence isn’t underway yet, experts have some guidance on how to prepare for cicada season. A periodical cicada that has just shed its outer skeleton crawls among holes dug by emerging cicada nymphs on May 20, 2021, in Takoma Park, Maryland. A young tree in Takoma Park, Maryland, is draped in netting in May 2021 to protect its small branches from being damaged by periodical cicadas laying their eggs in them. It’s not clear why periodical cicadas evolved to emerge every 13 or 17 years.

At the beginning of this year, she started hearing an eerie hum that got louder at night. Virginia has had explosive growth in data centers since the early 2000s, when Loudoun County started allowing data centers to be built. Loudoun County residents say the noise started this past winter and gets louder at night when it's cooler. In Loudoun County, residents said they could hear the data center even with their windows closed. Unlike previous data centers, the new ones use so-called free air cooling , designed to leverage lower temperatures to use less electricity than most data centers.

Retail executives generally agree that retail theft is worse than they've ever seen. Even so, leaders from Costco, Lowe's, Best Buy, and Tractor Supply have said their businesses aren't so affected. The companies have five striking similarities that are helping them win the war on retail theft. "Organized retail crime is worse now than I've ever seen it," Tractor Supply CEO Hal Lawton told Insider in August. Meanwhile, a typical Tractor Supply location may have as many as eight people working in a relatively small, 20,000 square-foot store.

Illustration: Fernando CabeloIF YOU BELIEVE a once-over with a mower on Saturday is all the maintenance a front lawn needs, you might be an average American suburbanite. When pro landscapers dragoon your neighbor’s turf, mowing is just part of the plan. It’s all the other things—string trimming around fence and mailbox posts, edging next to sidewalks, blowing clippings off the driveway—that elevate a green lawn into the envy of the neighborhood. Those actions can create a mantle of striped emerald so manicured you feel unfit walking on it, like your grandma’s freshly vacuumed carpet.

It’s a grail of contemporary horticulture, a subject of inquiry for scientists and landscape designers alike: how to reinvent the estimated 40 million acres of lawn in the United States, shifting the emphasis toward native plants. Because traditional lawn care is, at its essence, a perpetual fight against biodiversity, a war conducted with mower blades and chemicals. All of the numbers — the gallons of water wasted, the tons of pollution generated — tell us to stop. But what should replace all of that mowed grass? The answer is not easy.

You can pick up the echo in “Fixer," the haunting second collection of poems from Edgar Kunz. The narrator of these poems bounces from one side hustle to another, each more absurd than the last. Walking across the National Mall, I tore open a packet of wildflower seeds — sky lupine, mountain phlox, coreopsis — and scattered its contents across the grass. As I later learned, to little surprise, the seeds did not survive the regular visits of a John Deere lawn mower and applications of herbicide. My purpose was pure protest, a symbolic objection to the bland, Kermit-colored expanse that dominates the epicenter of our nation’s capital. Across the country, the millions of small, suburban versions of the Mall directly contribute to that corrosion. Conceived by Washington’s master planner, Pierre Charles L’Enfant, in 1791, the National Mall was supposed to be “a grand, tree-lined avenue, flanked by embassies and gardens,” as The Washington Post put it in its superb history of the Mall.

Opinion | The Turtle Who Came Back From the Dead

People also take turtles from the wild to keep as pets, even though the practice is now illegal in most states. One hazard of a turtle’s extremely limited home range is that a road built through a box turtle’s habitat is a road that a turtle will need to cross, especially during nesting season. “Every creature is made to withstand some forces and break under others,” Mary Laura writes in “Bomb Shelter.” “When it’s truck tires versus turtle, tires always win.”It’s odd that human beings account for almost all the reasons this species is in trouble. I was helping a turtle cross the road in a rural part of Tennessee last year when a pickup truck slowed down and all the guys in it gave me a big thumb’s up. These measures won’t keep all turtles safe, but they will keep many of them safe.

In this article LOWHD Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNTSome landscaping crews have begun to use battery-powered tools. Outdoor power equipment drives just a small fraction of the retailers' sales, said Zack Fadem, an analyst for Wells Fargo. Yet several more recent factors have increased interest in electric power for landscaping. Tractor Supply , a home improvement player that tends to be in rural areas, has been slower to add battery-powered outdoor equipment. At TPC Sawgrass in Florida, the landscaping crew has tried out an autonomous battery-powered mower and uses some electric leaf blowers.

By definition, gardens are thought of as green. In reality, though, the resources used to keep them looking pristine, in terms of water, fertilizers and fuel for the mower, are staggering. How can we garden in a way that’s better for biodiversity and sustainability?

Neither had I), I’ve come to see the old dad ways a little more sympathetically, and with some measure of recognition. Still, the touchstones of Boomer dad culture have outlived their descriptive usefulness for younger generations. What, we might ask, is dad culture in 2023? Finally, the new dad culture has definitely not found it necessary to put away childish things.

Lauren CobelloMy old house sold in a dayMy old house sold in a day for $185,000 — $16,000 above the asking price. The old house had room for plenty of sleepovers; we would host large ones for birthdays, but we can't do that in the new house. Cobello's new home (right) is about a third of the size of her old house. In the old house, my monthly expenses included $350 on property taxes, around $26 on garbage collection, and close to $66 on water. After paying off my mortgage on the old house, my proceeds from selling it will be around $55,000.

SUBURBIA IS apparently filled with masochists—evidenced by the fact that each Sunday I wake to the sound of all my neighbors concurrently grooming their lawns. I feel compelled to join them, though I hate the two-hour chore. At least it makes my Apple Watch’s pedometer happy. You could outsource the task to an expensive landscaper, of course. Those who work at home will have to deal with the sonic blitzkrieg.
