After previous criticism at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board, it has stepped up its nuclear activities and reduced IAEA oversight. It has enough material enriched to lower levels for more bombs, but Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons. Grossi said on Wednesday he had asked Iran to cap that stock of 60% material and Iran had accepted his request. With the resolution passed, Iran is likely to respond. “If there is a resolution, it (Iran) will either increase its activities or reduce the agency’s access,” a senior diplomat said before the vote.

North Carolina lawyer Katie Jenifer is trying to prepare one year’s worth of estrogen for her transgender daughter. If the Trump administration still allows trans people to change the gender marker on their passport, Greenesmith said, it might require them to provide proof of gender-reassignment surgery, putting gender-marker changes out of reach for the majority of trans people. There is no existing policy that would allow the government to require people to turn in “X” passports, for example. Were Trump to follow through on his vow to impose tariffs on imports on Europe as well as from China, they would likely deviate further. There is also uncertainty across the continent about what the new White House will mean for the war in Ukraine. In their view, China could help to pressure Russia over Ukraine as Xi loses patience with a war he did not expect would drag on for almost three years. One senior European diplomat said that while China has never explicitly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it has helped in other ways to rein in Moscow. continues to say that Ukraine will negotiate when Ukraine wants to negotiate,” another European official said, “and that the E.U.

President-elect Donald Trump is considering naming Kevin Warsh as Treasury secretary then ultimately sending him off to serve as Federal Reserve chair, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The speculation comes with Treasury being the last major Cabinet position for which Trump has yet to state his intention. Among the potential scenarios would be one where Bessent would lead the National Economic Council initially then go over to Treasury after Warsh takes over at the Fed. However, Trump is known for the propensity to change his mind, and the report noted that nothing has been finalized. Read the full Wall Street Journal story here.

CNN —Iran announced Friday it was activating new advanced centrifuges – which enrich uranium for the country’s nuclear program – after the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog criticized the country for not cooperating with the agency. The IAEA and Iran have long tussled over various issues, including traces of uranium found at locations that have not been declared nuclear sites. He has acknowledged the UN agency cannot guarantee that none of Iran’s centrifuges may have been peeled away for clandestine enrichment. Under the terms of the nuclear deal struck in 2015, Iran was limited to operating around 5,000 older-model centrifuges, and the nation was allowed to use advance centrifuges for research purposes only. By 2019, Iran was launching new centrifuges in a major break from the deal.

Swedish battery maker Northvolt filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S., delivering a hard blow to Europe's electrification ambitions. A partner of major European automakers, Northvolt produces lithium-ion batteries for the blooming electric vehicle industry, which has recently been rocked by intensifying competition. "This decisive step will allow Northvolt to continue its mission to establish a homegrown, European industrial base for battery production," said Tom Johnstone, interim chairman of Northvolt's board. "Despite near-term challenges, this action to strengthen our capital structure will allow us to capture the continued market demand for vehicle electrification," he added. The Stockholm-based business has long been regarded as Europe's best hope of building a homegrown EV battery champion.

But TJ Maxx believes that Trump’s tariff plans will benefit the discount chain. TJX, the parent company of TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, said Wednesday that the “chaos” Trump’s tariffs may bring to the retail industry plays right into its business model. Tariffs are taxes placed on imported goods designed to protect domestic manufacturers. Unlike most brands and retailers, TJX says it only imports a small, undisclosed percentage of its merchandise from factories overseas. “In other words, even if prices do generally rise because of tariffs, TJX will still be relatively cheaper.”

Investors should brace themselves for another big move next year, according to an analysis of historical data from Bank of America. The S & P 500 is up 24.7% in 2024 and on track for its second straight year with a gain of more than 20%. After rising 31% and 38% in 1927 and 1928, respectively, the S & P 500 lost 12% in 1929 and another 28% in 1930, Hartnett said. The last time the S & P 500 posted back-to-back 20% annual gains was in the 1990s, soaring 34% in 1995 and 20% in 1996. Hartnett noted that the "secret sauce" for the S & P 500 to avoid some of the sharp reversals seen before is a decline in Treasury yields.

New York CNN —The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial has adjourned his sentencing, which was set for next week. Judge Juan Merchan also agreed to hold off on issuing his decision on presidential immunity until after he reviews the parties’ filings. The judge did not set a new sentencing date or make any further statements about the delay. Trump’s lawyers have argued his conviction should be tossed both because of the presidential immunity decision and his return to the White House. His sentencing, originally scheduled for July, was delayed twice after the Supreme Court’s immunity decision prompted Trump’s lawyers to file a motion to vacate the conviction.

The revelations highlight the rising cyberthreats tied to geopolitics and nation-state actor rivals of the U.S., but inside the federal government, there's disagreement on how to fight back, with some advocates calling for the creation of an independent federal U.S. Cyber Force. Talent shortages, inconsistent training, and misaligned missions, are undermining CYBERCOM's capacity to respond effectively to complex cyber threats, it says. Known for his assertive national security measures, Trump's 2018 National Cyber Strategy emphasized embedding cyber capabilities across all elements of national power and focusing on cross-departmental coordination and public-private partnerships rather than creating a standalone cyber entity. Austin Berglas, a former head of the FBI's cyber program in New York who worked on consolidation efforts inside the Bureau, believes a separate cyber force could enhance U.S. capabilities by centralizing resources and priorities. "When I first took over the [FBI] cyber program … the assets were scattered," said Berglas, who is now the global head of professional services at supply chain cyber defense company BlueVoyant.

We find a compromiseI miss the days when I knew most of my kids' friends and their parents and we all looked out for each other's offspring. Rule number two is that they have to always keep their location on and share it with us on their devices. Rule number three, one we just added, is that we need the contact info of whoever they believe is their most responsible friend.
