A Ukrainian military video showed a soldier shooting down a Russian SU-25 jet. Su-25s are used to provide air support to Russian troops on the ground. "Today soldiers from the anti-aircraft missile division of the Edelweiss 10th Mountain Assault Brigade deployed an Igla anti-aircraft missile system to shoot down a Russian Su-25 [jet]," the unit said in a post, reported Ukrainska Pravda. The Su-25 is a Soviet era jet, designed to fly low and provide support to Russian troops on the ground. But this makes them vulnerable to strikes from anti-aircraft missiles fired by ground troops using shoulder-held launchers, reported The Economist.

Russian military bloggers said Ukrainian forces had smashed through a section of the Russian lines south of the town of Velyka Novosilka, briefly taking several villages as Russian forces retreated to higher ground. Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-installed official in the part of the Zaporizhzhia region controlled by Russia, said Russian forces had then taken the village back. Ukraine has said it made gains near Bakhmut, which fell to Russia last month. Russia's defence ministry published several videos and pictures over recent days showing numerous strikes on Ukrainian-manned armoured vehicles and tanks from Ka-52 attack helicopters and drones.

The 128th Mountain Assault Brigade is an elite force that has been involved in combat with Russian or Russian-backed forces since 2014, when fighting began in eastern Ukraine. The 128th Brigade are training with Soviet-calibre mortars, but Khomych said a bigger necessity than new mortars was Western-supplied armoured vehicles to protect troops better.
