The eruption at Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki just after midnight on Monday spewed thick brownish ash as high as 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) into the air and hot ashes hit a nearby village, burning down several houses including a convent of Catholic nuns, said Firman Yosef, an official at the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki monitoring post. Authorities also raised the danger level and widened the danger zone for Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki on Monday, following a series of eruptions that began last week. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki spews volcanic materials from its crater during a previous eruption in East Flores, Indonesia, on January 14, 2024. Andre Kriting/AP/FileA nun in Hokeng village died and another was missing, said Agusta Palma, the head of the Saint Gabriel Foundation that oversees convents on the majority-Catholic island. It’s Indonesia’s second volcanic eruption in as many weeks.

CNN —At least 37 people have been killed, and more than a dozen injured on the Indonesian island of Sumatra after heavy rains triggered flash flooding and a cold lava flow from an active volcano, search and rescue officials said on Sunday. Cold lava, also known as lahar, is a mixture of volcanic debris such as ash, sand and pebbles that flows down a volcano’s slopes during wet weather. Images shared by Indonesia’s disaster response agency showed thick mud and ash partially covering roads and mountainside villages near the foot of Mount Marapi, an active volcano in western Sumatra. Adi Prima/Anadolu/Getty ImagesThe 2,891-meter-high (9,500 feet) Mount Marapi is among the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, which lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire with 127 active volcanos – more than anywhere else in the world. It has erupted 11 times during the early 21st century, with it deadliest single event having killed 60 people in 1979.

Heavy rain in Indonesia over the weekend triggered flash flooding and sent torrents of cold lava coursing down a volcano and into towns, killing at least 37 people, officials said. Hours of rain on Saturday night carried volcanic rock and ash down Mount Marapi, an active volcano on the island of Sumatra. Those mudslides are known as lahars in Indonesian, which translates to cold lava. Four areas on the western part of Sumatra were badly impacted, according to Indonesia’s disaster management agency. By Sunday night, 37 residents had been killed and another 17 were missing, the agency said.

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted Sunday, spreading searing gas clouds and avalanches of lava down its slopes as other active volcanoes flared up across the country, forcing the evacuation of thousands. A column of hot clouds blasted 100 meters (about 109 yards) into the air as ash blanketed several villages without casualties, he added. Merapi is the most active out of more than 120 volcanoes across the country. Also on Sunday, Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province erupted again, its third biggest flare-up this month, albeit without discharging lava. In December 2021, Mount Semeru, the highest volcano on Java island, erupted, leaving 48 people dead and 36 missing.

The 2,891-metre high volcano in West Sumatra erupted on Sunday, spewing gray clouds of ash as high as 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) into the sky. Search operations for 10 missing climbers were under way on Tuesday, local authorities said, with about 200 local rescuers involved. For more than a decade, Indonesia's volcanology agency had sent monthly letters warning the environment ministry and local conservation agency that climbers should keep a safe distance from the volcano's peak, said agency head Hendra Gunawan. The volcano erupted several times in January and February 2023, but its relatively infrequent eruptions during the past decade have made it difficult to analyse, said Ahmad Basuki of the volcanology agency.
