Tesla is recalling 2,431 Cybertrucks to replace defective drive inverters, according to notices made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Wednesday. It's the sixth recall of the Cybertruck since the angular steel pickup went on sale about a year ago. Tesla addressed the previous Cybertruck recall with an over-the-air software update to fix an issue that caused images from the truck's backup cameras to not display correctly after the driver shifted into reverse. The latest Cybertruck recall requires the replacement of a part called a drive inverter, which provides power to the wheels of the vehicle. The NHTSA is investigating possible safety defects in Tesla's FSD option, a partially automated driving system. In one instance, a Tesla driver using FSD fatally struck a pedestrian. Magno referred to an array of posts shared by Tesla on X, the social network owned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. One post showed a driver using FSD to go to a hospital while enduring a possible heart attack. In the posts, Tesla suggested there are "advantages to using FSD while inebriated" or while fatigued, Magno wrote.

She said she is still undecided but “I have the right to vote.”Saule Bohoney was also wiped off of Virginia’s voter registration rolls. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Republican officials in Virginia to revive a plan aimed at removing noncitizen voters from the rolls ahead of next week’s election. Virginia has same-day voter registration, meaning that any eligible voter who was removed from the rolls should still be able to vote. The Justice Department said that while states can review its voter rolls, it cannot do so right before an election. States are barred from systematically removing people from voters rolls within 90 days of an election under the National Voter Registration Act. In court papers, the groups said that "the record makes clear that citizens are being removed from the voter rolls."

Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, framed the effort in Virginia as a commonsense way of ensuring noncitizens don’t vote. At issue are about 1,600 voter registrations that Virginia said came from self-identified noncitizens but that a US District Court said hadn’t been fully vetted for citizenship status. Noncitizens are not allowed to vote in federal elections; none of the lower court rulings had changed that fact. But documented cases of noncitizens voting are extremely rare. Those opposed to the program relied on a 1993 law, the National Voter Registration Act, which bars states from making “systematic” changes to voting rolls with 90 days of a federal election.

A federal judge on Friday granted a Department of Justice request to block Virginia from systematically removing alleged noncitizens from the voter rolls this close to an election. "All of the eligible voters who were wrongfully purged from the voter rolls will now be able to cast their ballots," Snow said. The Justice Department said in a previous filing that 43 people removed from rolls in Prince William County were likely U.S. citizens. States are barred from systematically removing people from voters rolls within 90 days of an election under the National Voter Registration Act. A lawyer for the state of Virginia, Charles Cooper, defended the program in court Thursday, arguing, “There are going to be hundreds of noncitizens back on these rolls.

A federal judge on Friday blocked Virginia from purging its voter rolls of alleged noncitizens and ordered the state to reinstate more than 1,600 people who had already been bounced from those lists. Judge Patricia Giles in her ruling agreed with arguments by the U.S. Department of Justice, which said that the purge ordered by Gov. Federal law bars states from systematically removing people from voter rolls within 90 days of an election. The DOJ said in a court filing that 43 people in Prince William County who had been removed from voter rolls were likely U.S. citizens, and lawyers earlier this week confirmed that 18 American citizens were removed from voter rolls. Giles said it was "not happenstance" that Youngkin had issued his executive order to purge the voter rolls exactly 90 days before Election Day.

Chinese companies are aggressively developing autonomous vehicles. In August, China announced that it had issued 16,000 test licenses for driverless cars and opened up about 20,000 miles of roads nationwide for autonomous vehicle testing. But Chinese autonomous vehicle companies have also quietly been testing their technology on U.S. streets. Michael Dunne, CEO and founder of consulting firm Dunne Insights, told CNBC that China had "carte blanche" when it comes to testing AVs in California. Missy Cummings, a former senior safety advisor to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, told CNBC the ban was a good start.

New York CNN —The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has launched an investigation into the safety of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature, or FSD, after at least one fatal accident involving a pedestrian. The investigation is looking into four accidents involving vehicles using the FSD feature. FSD is at the center of Tesla’s plans for future growth and profitability. This is not the first time that the NHTSA has announced it is investigating Tesla’s self-driving features. In February 2023 the agency ordered a recall to change the FSD software on all of the more than 360,000 Teslas then on US roads with the feature.

A federal judge on Wednesday temporarily blocked Alabama’s voter removal program that flagged thousands of registered voters and accused them of illegally registering in the state. The Justice Department sued the state of Alabama challenging the program aimed at removing voters from its election rolls, arguing it was too close to the Nov. 5 election. Allen announced a process for purging 3,251 registered Alabama voters in August, 84 days before Election Day. The case is among several instances of voter purges in Republican-led states ahead of this fall’s presidential election. The Justice Department lawsuit said it has already been determined that legal voters were mistakenly purged from the voter rolls.

CNN —Police in Toronto, Canada, are opening a hate crime investigation after shots were fired overnight into the window of a Jewish girls’ elementary school – the second time this year the school was targeted by gunfire, officials said. The investigation into the incident will be led by the agency’s Gun and Gang Task Force with assistance from its hate crime unit, he added. There were no injuries or reports of gunshots heard, and the building was empty because the school is currently closed for the Jewish High Holidays, Krawczyk said. The same school was also hit with gunfire in a similar incident in May, Krawczyk said. The agency has increased police presence in Jewish neighborhoods in recent weeks and will also do so at the school as the investigation unfolds, Krawczyk said.

Nearly a third, 30%, of consumers said paying for return shipping was more annoying than jury duty and going to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
