Ford Motor Company has agreed to pay $165 million, the second-largest auto penalty ever issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to settle charges it failed to comply with federal recall requirements. “The total civil penalty amount of $165 million is second only to the Takata airbag consent order in the agency’s 54-year history,” the NHTSA said in a statement. The Ford penalty stems from a multi-year investigation into the automaker's handling of defective rollover safety cameras on a number of its models, including its popular F-150 trucks and Explorer SUVs. In a statement, Ford said it disagreed with NHTSA's findings but that it was pleased to administratively settle the dispute with the regulator. Power's "initial quality" report earlier this year as a sign the company is making progress on addressing those issues.

Schwarzman has called Blackstone his family office, but he has another family office, BI has learned. Inside Schwarzman's secretive family office with a name that harkens back to his childhood. Tomohiro Ohsumi | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesDETROIT — Toyota Motor sounded the alarm Friday that California-led electric vehicle mandates that are set to start next year are "impossible" to meet and, if they're not changed, will lead to less customer choice in several states. Battery-electric, fuel cell and, to an extent, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles qualify as zero emission under the regulations. At this point, it looks impossible," Jack Hollis, chief operating officer of Toyota Motor North America, said during a virtual media roundtable Friday. A Nissan badge is attached to the grill of a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder on December 3, 2012 in Niles, Illinois. Nissan Motor Co is recalling more than 300,000 SUVs in the United States over an issue in which the hood suddenly opens, obstructing the driver's view and increasing the risk of a crash. Nissan Motor said it would slash 9,000 jobs and cut global production capacity by a fifth, while revising its annual profit outlook sharply lower as it battles headwinds in China and the United States. Japan's third-largest automaker cut its annual operating profit forecast by 70% to 150 billion yen ($975 million), marking its second downward revision after a 17% cut earlier this year. Together, the two markets account for nearly half of Nissan's global sales by volume.

Silicon anodes vs. solid-state batteriesAnalysts say silicon anodes theoretically offer 10 times the energy density as graphite, which are commonly used in battery anodes today. Silicon anodes, for example, are known to swell significantly during charging, which reduces the battery's longevity. Especially in the West, advances in the area of silicon anodes [are] seen as strategic opportunity to catch up with China. Nonetheless, analysts remain skeptical about when solid-state batteries will actually make it to market. "However, there are significant technical challenges going to 100% silicon anode such as silicon expansion affecting the longevity of the batteries and currently there are several routes to produce silicon anodes," he added.

Solid-state batteries have long been billed as the "holy grail" of sustainable driving. As the name suggests, solid-state batteries contain a solid electrolyte, made from materials such as ceramics. Toyota said the corrective order instructed it to "make drastic reforms to ensure appropriate certification operations." CNN —Sex and gender are often conflated or equated in everyday conversations, and most American adults believe a person’s gender is determined by sex assigned at birth. But a new study of nearly 5,000 9- and 10-year-olds found that sex and gender map onto largely distinct parts of the brain. The researchers on the new study defined sex as what was assigned to the child at birth. They also hope to see how different cultures affect a person’s gender and their brain development. The study did not look at whether sex or gender were congruent or incongruent in any study participant.

In a boost for Toyota, Indian state cuts levies on hybrid cars

A move by India's Uttar Pradesh state to waive some levies on hybrid cars will make them 10% cheaper, delivering Japan's Toyota Motor a big win in lobbying efforts and raising industry and analyst expectations that other states could follow suit. Just as it does with electric cars, the government of India's most populous state will also waive the registration tax on some hybrid car sales, it said in a July 5 notification. Hybrid cars offer fuel savings as they operate on both electric motors and combustion engines. "This is a sizeable incentive provided by a state for hybrid cars. In June, 51 million people tuned in to watch the much-anticipated debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump. Biden later told ABC that he “just had a really bad cold” on debate night and said he was distracted by Trump “still shouting” over his muted microphone while Biden was speaking. Last November, Dr. Bruce Aronwald, Trump’s personal physician since 2021, issued a meager, three-paragraph, data-devoid note attesting to Trump’s physical and cognitive fitness for office. While the USPSTF review is noncommittal on the use of dementia screening in ostensibly asymptomatic people, there’s no ambiguity in the use of testing in adults where dementia is a concern. There are a variety of screening exams such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) or Mini-Mental State Examination that are used to detect signs of cognitive decline.
