AdvertisementTwo of the reported candidates for Treasury Secretary made their fortunes on Wall Street, including billionaire Apollo CEO Marc Rowan. Eligible federal appointees can defer capital gains taxes indefinitely when they sell stock or other assets in order to avoid a conflict of interest. As a top earner in New York, they would normally have to pay more than $3 million in capital gains taxes. The sum that would have been spent on capital gains taxes is now free to compound and grow. The IRS allows investors to defer capital gains taxes in other scenarios that are deemed outside their control.

Following a long period of waiting, "the IPO market's back." That's according to Colin Stewart, Morgan Stanley's global head of technology equity capital markets. In an interview with CNBC's "TechCheck" on Monday, Stewart said 10 to 15 more tech companies could go public before the end of 2024, with an even "better year" in store for 2025. Morgan Stanley was the lead banker on the Reddit and Astera IPOs, positioning itself to collect roughly $37 million in total fees. Wall Street rival Goldman Sachs led the latest venture-backed tech IPO last week.

LONDON, Dec 3 (Reuters) - A global securities watchdog proposed 21 safety measures on Sunday to improve integrity, transparency and enforcement in voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) in a sector of growing importance to efforts to combat climate change. VCMs cover pollution-reducing projects, such as reforestation, renewable energy, biogas and solar power, that generate carbon credits companies buy to offset their emissions and meet net-zero targets. National regulators could require companies to disclose their use of carbon credits, and platforms that trade credits to have better anti-fraud and market manipulation safeguards, IOSCO said. VCMs are separate from government-regulated carbon markets, such as the emissions trading scheme in the European Union, the world's largest. Good practice could include "comprehensive disclosures on the project development process, verification and auditing methodologies, and the entities responsible for measurement, reporting, and verification," IOSCO said.

A decade later, Trump's failed Bills bid is one of the business moves under scrutiny in the trial of a lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. In offering to buy the Bills, Trump cited his net worth as $8 billion in an initial offer letter but never provided his financial statements. Throughout the sale process, Cohen insisted Trump was serious about his bid and his commitment to keeping the Bills in Buffalo. “There’s nobody more serious than Donald Trump,” Cohen said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2014. Trump told the AP in 2016 that had he been able to buy the Bills, it’s unlikely that he would've run for president.

The same inevitable supply-and-demand dynamic is about to wash over us again with large language models and generative AI. AI models are trained on masses of data from the past. Humans are good at learning quickly from a small amount of data, while AI models need mountains of information to train on. Soon, human content creators will be vying for attention with content generated by AI models. 'Utility, value and signaling'Hartz, a venture capitalist who now chairs Eventbrite's board, says successful technologists will continue to spend heavily on human experiences.

LONDON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - U.S. hedge fund Davidson Kempner Capital Management (DK) said on Friday it had agreed to sell Prelios to fintech firm ION Group, in a long-awaited deal which two sources said valued the Italian credit manager at 1.35 billion euros ($1.5 billion). DK, which did not disclose the sale price, had been looking for a buyer for years, and held discussions for several months with ION. Dublin-based ION Group was in turn in talks with banks for months to secure funding for the deal. Founded by former Salomon Brothers trader Andrea Pignataro, ION Group provides services of trading, analytics, treasury and risk management for capital and commodity markets. In 2021 in Italy alone, ION bought banking software provider Cedacri for $1.8 billion and acquired Cerved in a deal that valued the credit data and management group at nearly 2 billion euros.

A bar chart of U.S. bank failures since 2001, showing that Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse was the second-biggest in U.S. history in terms of assets. Before Silicon Valley Bank, the last firm to fail was in late 2020, as the coronavirus was ravaging the country. It’s unclear whether the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank will spread to the broader industry. Silicon Valley Bank 209 17. Silicon Valley Bank 209 Fifth Third Bank 17.
Russia urgently needs to develop new markets for its oil and gas companies, with Western sanctions cutting into the backbone of its economy. It’s relying on a 37-year-old former Morgan Stanley banker to keep profits flowing. Pavel Sorokin , Russia’s deputy energy minister, is part of a cadre of young technocrats with deep knowledge of the West, fast-tracked by Vladmir Putin to the upper echelons of power. Mr. Sorokin, who studied finance in London, has negotiated deals in Africa and the Middle East. He played an early role in the development of OPEC+, the partnership between Russia’s oil industry and the Saudi-led Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
The top picks of Morgan Stanley bank analyst Betsy Graseck are looking undervalued as the market rallies, she said Wednesday in a report. "Our most preferred stocks RF, WFC & JPM have largely been left out of the current market rally and look undervalued for their asset sensitivity and skew to quality," Graseck said. Graseck is among the analysts who have generally urged caution on banks because loan losses are expected to rise this year as the economy slows or even enters a recession. But bank stocks have caught a bid in early 2023, along with 2022's other beaten-down sectors, with the KBW Bank Index up 11.5% so far. Her three top picks could rise a median 24%, about 4% more than other large cap banks in her coverage in a base-case scenario, she said.
NEW YORK, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Moelis & Co. has hired two former Morgan Stanley bankers, Arek Kurkciyan and Dennis Crandall, as managing directors to help drive dealmaking in the life sciences and outsourced pharmaceutical services sectors for the investment bank. Both Kurkciyan and Crandall were managing directors in the healthcare investment banking unit at Morgan Stanley. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterIn their previous roles at Morgan Stanley, both bankers worked on significant deals involving large healthcare corporations and financial sponsors. In recent months, Moelis has been attempting to shore up its healthcare M&A unit. It recently hired another senior banker Igor Sokolovsky to help with dealmaking across sectors, with a special focus on healthcare.
Big American banks have mostly resisted bulking up loan loss reserves this year as the financial health of consumers and corporations has held up despite mounting recession concerns. For much of the year, bank managers have told one story, while stocks have told another. Retail customers were spending briskly and still had ample cash in their accounts, executives including Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan have said . In April, JPMorgan was the first big bank to begin boosting reserves for credit losses, taking a $902 million charge. Analysts expect the New York-based bank to generate $2.90 per share in third-quarter earnings, 22% lower than a year earlier.
Elon Musk texted with Larry Ellison before saying his Twitter deal was on hold, per a court filing. Twitter is arguing Musk's legal team is withholding text messages it subpoenaed related to the deal. Twitter subpoenaed Ellison in August, but the text messages have yet to be publicly filed. In 2018, Ellison was named to Tesla's board of directions and said he was "very close friends with Elon Musk." Twitter's legal team appears to be building a case around some of Musk's texts.
Musk's team argued an alleged $7.75 million severance to the Twitter whistleblower breached the deal. In the letter, Musk's lawyers argued that a recently reported $7.75 million severance payment given to Twitter whistleblower and ex-security chief Peiter Zatko breached the deal. Last week, one of Musk's text messages appeared to cast doubt on the billionaire's reasons for ditching the deal. Twitter's legal team used the tweet to support its argument that Musk is walking away from the deal due to economic concerns. More of Musk's text are expected to be released publicly as soon as Monday.
