It was a sweltering day in Palm Springs, and a few intrepid tourists braved the unforgiving sun to snap selfies at the stilettoed feet of a colossal Marilyn Monroe, her white dress seeming to billow up in the hot dry wind. Some of them had heard she was not likely to be standing there much longer. “That’s why we came today — to take pictures,” said Lauri Hatcher, who used to live in Palm Springs and returns each year. “Because it makes me super sad.”The statue — a 26-foot tall, 17-ton Monroe in her famous subway grate pose from the 1955 movie “The Seven Year Itch” — had bitterly divided the desert city. Some objected that it blocked views of the Palm Springs Art Museum and confronted visitors leaving the museum with Monroe’s exposed underwear.

CNN —There was something uncanny about Sydney Sweeney’s look at the Vanity Fair Oscars party last night. Last week, Sweeney made her “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut with a string of jokes centered around her sexualized typecasting, rumors of affairs with co-stars and the size of her chest. Were Sweeney’s breasts, as one writer for Canada’s National Post put it, “double-D harbingers of the death of woke”? “(But) with Sweeney, what it really comes down to is this: Sex sells.”Since then, it’s been open season for Sydney Sweeney boob jokes, especially in comments under the actor’s Instagram posts. “Leave Sydney Sweeney’s boobs out of this,” wrote The Cut.

Don Murray, the boy-next-door actor who made his film debut as Marilyn Monroe’s infatuated cowboy in “Bus Stop” in 1956 and played a priest, a drug addict, a gay senator and myriad other roles in movies, on television and onstage over six decades, has died at 94. His son Christopher confirmed the death but provided no other details. In the postwar 1950s, when being sensitive, responsible and a “nice guy” were important attributes in a young man, Mr. Murray was a churchgoing pacifist who became a conscientious objector during the Korean War. He fulfilled his service obligation by working for two and a half years in German and Italian refugee camps for $10 a month, assisting orphans, the injured and the displaced. Back from Europe in 1954, he settled on an acting career focused on socially responsible themes.

Marie Irvine was 99 years old when a chapter in her long-ago career became a TikTok sensation. During a crucial period late in Marilyn Monroe’s life, Ms. Irvine had been her makeup artist in New York City. When a TikTok star learned her story, it blew up the internet. In 1958, Life magazine commissioned Richard Avedon to reimagine Ms. Monroe as the screen and stage sirens Clara Bow, Marlene Dietrich, Theda Bara, Jean Harlow and Lillian Russell. It was Ms. Irvine who assisted with her makeup — turning her into Ms. Russell’s candy-box pinup, and Ms. Dietrich’s steamy Lola Lola from the film “The Blue Angel.”It ran in the Dec. 22 issue of the magazine, with a piece written by Ms. Monroe’s husband at the time, the playwright Arthur Miller, with the headline, “My Wife Marilyn.” He described the photos “as a kind of history of our mass fantasy, so far as seductresses are concerned.”And when Ms. Monroe, having been sewn into her skintight sequined gown, sang a breathless “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy at a Democratic fund-raiser at Madison Square Garden in May of 1962, it was Ms. Irvine who prepared her beforehand in Ms. Monroe’s apartment on East 57th Street, and then rushed to the Garden later with the star’s drop earrings, because she had left them behind.

CNN —At the 2023 Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles last night, not one, but three celebrities arrived in a decidedly retro accessory: Evening gloves. First popularized in the 16th century, the opera glove (usually categorized as being between 19 and 23 inches in length) has long been a dependable garment to elevate and exaggerate any ensemble. Gomez wore her accessories over her opera gloves. Marilyn Monroe created an iconic opera gloves moment, teaming them with a bustier dress in the 1953 movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." For its latest Fall-Winter 2023 campaign, Versace dressed down a pair of black croc-effect leather elbow gloves with blue denim jeans.

When Marilyn Monroe moved to Brentwood in 1962, the Los Angeles neighborhood provided the perfect seclusion for the world’s most famous woman. The four-bedroom Spanish colonial-style house was tucked off a quiet street, with a kidney-shaped pool and towering palm trees. The house was known as “Cursum Perficio,” which in Latin loosely translates to “I end the journey.”Six months after she moved in, Ms. Monroe died of a drug overdose in her bedroom. Though her time there was short, the Brentwood home has become a quiet monument to her grand life, with fans still leaving flowers at the front gate some 60 years after her death. The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Friday to begin a process that would designate the home as a historic and cultural monument, saving it from demolition.

By her own admission, the actor Anastasia Graff is a maximalist who loves “girlie things,” so it’s not altogether surprising that she wanted a periwinkle kitchen for her 1930s-era West Hollywood home. Still, such a bold choice could send some interior designers into a tailspin. Clad in white-painted wood siding with a wide porch, it had appealed to Graff because it reminded her of the traditional wooden homes on the East Coast, where she grew up. But it didn’t hurt that the place is part of local lore: It once belonged to the Russian-born composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky, who lived in Los Angeles from 1940 to 1969, while he conducted the L.A. Philharmonic both downtown and at the Hollywood Bowl. “You realize in Los Angeles, there’s a story behind every house,” says Graff.

What Does ‘Colorful Formal’ Mean?
  + stars: | 2023-06-12 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
What is “colorful formal”? Where did it come from, and what does it mean I should wear? “Colorful formal” is yet another newish dress code term that, like “creative black tie” or “razzle-dazzle” or “mountain elegant,” actually makes the recipient of such an invitation want to rip it into little shreds and stomp on them. What is wrong, one wonders, with plain old “black tie” or “cocktail dress”? Those terms are generic enough to encompass a broad range of outfits (one person’s cocktail is another person’s lingerie), and the guardrails are relatively clear.

Ana de Armas garnered an Academy Award nomination for best actress in a leading role for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix's "Blonde" — amid controversy over the movie. De Armas, 34, was nominated for the Oscar a day after “Blonde” got eight Razzie Award nominations, including worst picture and screenplay, further underscoring how polarizing the film has been. This is the Cuban-born actor's first Oscar nomination. Her performance in the movie also earned de Armas her second Golden Globe nomination last year. “Argentina, 1985” won a Golden Globe last month for best non-English language motion picture.
Kim Kardashian is now the owner of one of Princess Diana’s precious jewels. The “Kardashians” star bought the Princess of Wales’ amethyst and diamond Attallah Cross for $197,453, Sotheby’s London announced on Jan. 18. The piece was worn by Diana on Oct. 27, 1987, when she attended a charity gala in London. Diana, Princess Of Wales, arrives at a charity gala wearing a gold and amethyst crucifix in 1987. Diana’s famous sapphire engagement ring, which now belongs to the new Princess of Wales, the former Kate Middleton, was also designed by Garrard.
It’s not a fresh take or a wrong one, but the tone is so self-conscious and surreal as to blunt those insights. Dominik also distastefully deals with Monroe’s lost pregnancies by peeking at the fetus inside her, which becomes symbolic of just how overdone much of the movie is. Still, “Blonde” is almost wholly de Armas’ show, and to the extent it’s worth sitting through at all give her every ounce of credit. Indeed, once you get past admiring de Armas’ immersion into the role, that’s the only itch that “Blonde” seems to know how to scratch. “Blonde” premieres September 16 in select US theaters and September 28 on Netflix.
In 2010, three of Marilyn Monroe’s chest and pelvis X-rays sold for $45,000. The real-life Monroe was gutsy enough to break a contract with 20th Century Fox and start her own production company, which she named Marilyn Monroe Productions. American actress Marilyn Monroe in Times Square, New York City, on December 12, 1955. I’m not saying films about Marilyn Monroe must be filled with butterflies and sunshine, or that art should never be difficult or emotionally disturbing. We are ultimately left with a bleak vision of Monroe’s life, albeit one that, perhaps due to de Armas’ acting more than the script itself, is still affecting.
Netflix will surely get its money’s worth attention-wise thanks in part to its restrictive NC-17 rating, but the film’s merits burn out long before its credits ever roll. It’s not a fresh take or a wrong one, but the tone is so self-conscious and surreal as to blunt those insights. Norma Jeane is eventually transformed into Marilyn Monroe, but even then she consistently speaks of her star persona in the third person, as if the image stands apart and utterly separate from the human being behind it. Still, “Blonde” is almost wholly de Armas’ show, and to the extent it’s worth sitting through at all give her every ounce of credit. Indeed, once you get past admiring de Armas’ immersion into the role, that’s the only itch that “Blonde” seems to know how to scratch.
