Read previewApple has made a big brand-partnerships hire who will work across its Apple TV+ entertainment business, a sign that it's serious about becoming a bigger advertising company. Lewinsky's role at Apple is expected to resemble that of Mahta Eghbali, who led copromotions for Apple TV+ films, TV, and sports and who left the company in 2023. Industry sources who work in branded entertainment said Apple TV+ has been stepping up efforts to use brands to promote its entertainment. Apple TV+ doesn't have an ad tier, but it's made a handful of hires from the TV business that have fueled speculation that it plans to introduce one, despite its long-held stance on customer privacy. Apple TV+ also recently hired a marketing vet, Tony Trujillo, to run marketing partnerships.

Knox, Sollecito and Ivory Coast native Rudy Guede, whose DNA was present in the murder room, were all convicted of the murder in 2009. Guglielmo Mangiapane/Reuters/FileKnox and Sollecito’s murder convictions were overturned by a Perugia appellate court in 2011 after an independent review of key forensic evidence, only to have that acquittal overturned by Italy’s supreme court in 2013. The 36-year-old Seattle native, now a mother of two, along with Sollecito, were definitively cleared in 2015 of Kercher’s murder after Italy’s supreme court voided the 2013 re-conviction. After being cleared of murder, Knox remained convicted of slander against Lumumba, a ruling upheld by Italy’s supreme court in 2015. The decision will then have to go to Italy’s supreme court once more.

To the Editor:Re “Daniels Details Sex With Trump, Which He Denies” (front page, May 8):I found Stormy Daniels’s detailed testimony about her one-night stand with Donald Trump, which he denies ever happened, to be very credible. Her admitted hatred of Mr. Trump felt like honesty, not a motive to have made up the story. If the jury agrees, Mr. Trump is therefore the liar. It’s not far from there to make the reasonable inference that if he is lying about the event at the heart of the case, he will lie about everything that came after. Stephanie DobaBrooklynTo the Editor:You report that the judge during Stormy Daniels’s testimony objected to her description of the sexual positions with Donald Trump as veering in a “scurrilous direction.” It is too bad that no judge objected to the Kenneth Starr report on President Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky, which was even more scurrilous in describing the sexual encounter.

Political appointees in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel have declared that the Constitution implicitly establishes immunity for sitting presidents. But political appointees in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, whose interpretations are binding on the executive branch, have declared that the Constitution implicitly establishes such immunity. (That same month, Mr. Nixon had Mr. Cox fired in the so-called Saturday Night Massacre. Amid a political backlash, Mr. Nixon was forced to allow a new special counsel, Leon Jaworski, to resume the investigation.) Mr. Starr later said that he had concluded that he could indict Mr. Clinton.

Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to recognize that he had total legal immunity as president. Trump is asking the Supreme Court to grant him a sweeping immunity mandate as he runs to recapture the presidency. "This may indeed be the most important US Supreme Court case in the history of our country," he told journalists at a panel organized by the Defend Democracy Project. The Supreme Court will likely issue a decision in late April. "The Supreme Court need not stray into other questions just because Trump has made it easy for them.

CNN’s MJ Lee and Jeff Zeleny reported Wednesday that Obama was in the White House for a working visit just last week. Two Democratic presidents who won second terms are uniting to try to usher a successor, who is older than both of them, into the same rarified political air. And Clinton has been out of the White House for nearly a quarter of a century. But Biden was also a valuable ally for Clinton after the president’s impeachment over an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. And after he became vice president, Biden developed a friendly and cordial relationship with Hillary Clinton, maintained by regular breakfasts at the vice president’s official residence in Washington.

Joseph I. Lieberman, Connecticut’s four-term United States senator and Vice President Al Gore’s Democratic running mate in the 2000 presidential election won by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney when the Supreme Court halted a Florida ballot recount, died on Wednesday in Manhattan. In the ensuing campaign, the Gore-Lieberman team stressed themes of integrity to sidestep Clinton administration scandals. Mr. Lieberman also urged Americans to bring religion and faith more prominently into public life. They won a narrow plurality of the popular votes — a half-million more than the Bush-Cheney Republican ticket. But on the evening of Election Day, no clear winner had emerged in the Electoral College, and an intense legal battle took center stage.

On Tuesday, when the special counsel Robert Hur testifies before Congress, it will be high presidential-year political theater. This is just the latest example of the inversion of the aims of the special counsel office. A special counsel is supposed to ensure that the Justice Department can credibly conduct sensitive investigations that are, and that appear to be, fair and apolitical. Yet special counsels (and their precursors) have for decades failed to achieve this goal — a failure that has now reached a peak with two special counsels having an extraordinary impact on a presidential election. Special counsels have had different labels over the years.

Another previously settled lawsuit alleged Baylor fostered a “hunting ground for sexual predators.”The terms of the settlement announced Monday were not disclosed. While we can never erase the reprehensible acts of the past, we pray that this agreement will allow these 15 survivors to move forward in a supportive manner," Baylor University said in a statement. The law firm's report determined that under the leadership of school President Ken Starr, Baylor did little to respond to accusations of sexual assault involving football players over several years. It also raised broader questions of how the school responded to sexual assault claims across campus. Baylor officials have said the school has made sweeping changes to how it addresses sexual assault claims and victims in response to the Pepper Hamilton report.

CNN —The initiation of an impeachment investigation against a president ought to be an earthshaking moment in the nation’s history. Republicans could use an impeachment investigation of the president to fuel public suspicion over Hunter Biden’s cascading controversies. But the coming impeachment investigation represents a gamble for Republicans since it could cause a backlash in moderate districts that their majority depends on. Ian Sams, a White House spokesman for oversight and investigations, blasted the impeachment investigation as “extreme politics at its worst.”But the strain of an impeachment inquiry is hardly the way the White House would have preferred to prepare for election year. If the impeachment investigation does uncover more direct involvement of Joe Biden, condemnations of McCarthy’s action may have been premature.

Elon Musk says X will strip ability to block accounts

'X' logo is seen reflected on an apartment window across the street from the headquarters of the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in downtown San Francisco, California, U.S., July 30, 2023. The block function on X allows a user to restrict specific accounts from contacting them, seeing their posts or following them. "Block is going to be deleted as a 'feature', except for DMs," Musk said in a post on the platform, referring to direct messages. Removing or limiting the block feature might bring X into conflict with guidelines incorporated by Apple's (AAPL.O) App Store and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google Play. Political scientists are saying the public is tired of hearing about Donald Trump. The inattention is not unique, but it is alarming given the nature of the charges, experts say. "The fact that most people don't pay attention to politics is certainly not unique to Trump," Enos said. What perhaps is unique to Trump is that he's exhibited such high levels of corruption." Enos said Trump's actions should be especially alarming and problematic to Americans because of his efforts to attack a foundational part of American democracy.

Jenny Craig is going out of business

New York CNN —Jenny Craig, the weight-loss chain, has confirmed that it’s shutting down for good. Named after its founder, the Jenny Craig business started when she couldn’t lose weight after giving birth to her second child. WeightWatchers, for example, is getting into the prescription weight-loss drug business. The $106 million acquisition of Sequence will give WW a foothold into the growing market for prescription drugs to manage weight loss. Ozempic has gained popularity in part due to celebrities using it for weight loss.
But it’s not clear just how and when Musk might return Twitter to growth. Musk’s primary plan to grow Twitter’s business through an overhauled subscription strategy has resulted in much chaos but only a limited number of actual subscriptions. In the process, Musk has also upended his own reputation. Disrupting the digital town squareFor years, what differentiated Twitter from other social platforms was that it served as a central hub for real-time news. Tesla (TSLA) shareholders recently complained to the company’s board that Musk appears “overcommitted.”“His reputation has been diminished significantly with Twitter … and once you lose it, it’s very difficult to recover,” Klepper said.

Carroll alleges Trump assaulted her in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in or around 1996. In his first Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump wrote, "The E. Elon Musk’s Twitter begins purge of blue check marks
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( Clare Duffy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Elon Musk’s Twitter on Thursday began a purge of blue verification check marks from users who have not signed up for its subscription service, with the checks disappearing from the accounts of journalists, academics and celebrities. The initial rollout of the change appeared to be fairly glitchy, as blue checks disappeared and reappeared on some accounts. The change — and its confusing rollout — threatens to create an even greater risk of impersonation of high-profile users and confusion over the veracity of information on the platform. Twitter had previously said it would “begin winding down” blue checks granted under its old verification system — which emphasized protecting high-profile users at risk of impersonation — on April 1. Last week, Musk tweeted that the “final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20,” a date with special resonance to the billionaire entrepreneur given its meaning to marijuana enthusiasts.
New York CNN —Elon Musk and William Shatner clashed on Twitter over the weekend after the Star Trek actor complained about being forced to pay to keep his blue checkmark on the platform. In a tweet on Saturday, Shatner expressed frustration with Twitter’s plan to remove blue checkmarks from the accounts of celebrities, journalists, government officials and other high-profile individuals who don’t pay $84 a year (or $8 a month) for its subscription service, Twitter Blue. “Hey @elonmusk what’s this about blue checks going away unless we pay Twitter?” he tweeted. In the process, Twitter risks alienating some of the VIP users who have long been a key draw for millions to use the platform. Twitter said it will “begin winding down” the “legacy” blue checks for users on April 1.
