REUTERS/Ken CedenoThe Department of Justice is calling for Google to divest its Chrome browser, following a ruling in August that the company holds a monopoly in the search market. Chrome, which Google launched in 2008, provides the search giant with data it then uses for targeting ads. Additionally, the DOJ said that Google be prevented from entering into exclusionary agreements with third parties like Apple and Samsung. The DOJ also said that remedies should prevent Google from eliminating "emerging competitive threats through acquisitions, minority investments, or partnerships." In August, a federal judge ruled that Google holds a monopoly in the search market.

A white supremacist is accused of trying to destroy an electricity substation in Tennessee in an attempt to bring down the regional power network and disrupt American society, authorities said Monday. The theory was popularized by manifestos left by perpetrators in a number of high-profile neo-Nazi and white supremacist terrorist incidents, including the killing of 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019. Philippi drove to an electricity substation, along with undercover FBI agents, to carry out reconnaissance, the bureau said. While driving, he ordered C-4 explosives from the undercover agents, and at a later date he bought black powder intended to be used in pipe bombs. Philippi was arrested on Nov. 2 by undercover agents acting as co-conspirators who had agreed to be lookouts.

How Hermès is bucking the global luxury slowdown
  + stars: | 2024-10-31 | by ( Natalie Rice | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
French luxury company Hermès has spent nearly 200 years emphasizing quality, scarcity and desirability — a strategy that's helped it dominate the luxury sector, even over its much larger rivals. Analysts say the Birkin and the Kelly account for between 25% and 28% of Hermès' total revenue. For fiscal year 2023 Hermès reported the fourth-highest revenue total of the major luxury fashion brands, behind LVMH , Richemont and Kering . In its most recent quarter, Hermès posted double-digit revenue growth while competitors LVMH and Kering reported sharper-than-expected declines in sales. Globally, many luxury consumers have pulled back on spending, particularly aspirational buyers in 2023 and 2024.

With 24 races on the schedule and only a handful of days in between, forecasting track performance is critical to ensuring engineers are ready to make any necessary changes. While teams are allowed up to 60 operational staff at the track on race days, each is communicating with analysts back at headquarters. "Everyone there will be looking at their computer and providing feedback to the racetrack engineers with recommendations that can be actioned onto the race car." With the cost-cap limiting budgets to $135 million per year, automating repetitive tasks is crucial to ensuring teams are using their resources efficiently.

Right now, he has his sights set on the US election, with its high stakes and wide range of economic possibilities. In the short term, it would have a positive impact on US economic growth, creating a GDP boost in 2025 between 2.1% and 2.3%, he said. If Harris wins with a dividend Congress, yields could drop further from where they are, he said. REUTERS/Ken CedenoThe U.S. Department of Justice late Tuesday made recommendations for Google's search engine business practices, indicating that it was considering a possible breakup of the tech giant as an antitrust remedy. The DOJ also said it was "considering behavioral and structural remedies that would prevent Google from using products such as Chrome, Play, and Android to advantage Google search and Google search-related products and features — including emerging search access points and features, such as artificial intelligence — over rivals or new entrants." Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs, said the company plans to appeal the ruling and highlighted the court's emphasis on the high quality of Google's search products, which the judge also noted in his ruling. In the second quarter, "Google Search & Other" accounted for $48.5 billion in revenue, or 57% of Alphabet's total revenue. The company holds 90% of search market share.

CNN —Two mistakes from Italy star Gianluigi Donnarumma proved decisive on Tuesday night as Arsenal claimed a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. In the 20th minute, Donnarumma left his goal line to attempt to punch clear a cross from Leandro Trossard, but he was beaten to the ball by Havertz, who headed into the empty net. But Arsenal would double its lead in the 35th minute when Saka sent a curling free kick into the box. Gabriel Martinelli and Thomas Partey missed the ball, but so did Donnarumma and the cross found its way into his net.
