☆ Dixville Notch, New Hampshire: Harris and Trump tie in midnight vote to kick off Election Day

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have tied with three votes each in the tiny New Hampshire township of Dixville Notch, kicking off Election Day in one of the first places in the country to report its presidential preference. By tradition, all eligible voters gather at the now-dormant Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch to cast their secret ballots once polls open at midnight. Once every ballot is cast, votes are tallied and results announced – hours before anywhere else, making it a destination for national reporters, who often outnumber the voters. In January, four registered Republican voters and two independents participated in the GOP primary, casting six unanimous votes for former South Carolina Gov. CNN —Pre-election voting is winding down across the country, with many states wrapping up in-person early voting over the weekend. While overall pre-election voting is down, in some states more voters chose to vote in person early than they did in 2020. However, total pre-election voting in both states was still lower than in 2020 due to significantly fewer people choosing to vote by mail. Republicans grow their pre-election vote shareRepublicans have made up more of the pre-election vote than they did in 2020. The Trump campaign made more of an effort this year to encourage Republicans to vote early and by mail, a major shift from messaging against pre-election voting in 2020.

With so much at stake, CNN has identified 10 races to watch on Tuesday – grouped into buckets that nod to broader themes across the House landscape. Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger decided against seeking a fourth term, instead launching a campaign for governor in 2025. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has crafted a moderate profile by challenging his party on issues ranging from spending to immigration. This year she faces a challenge from GOP state Rep. Gabe Evans, a fellow Mexican American and a former Army helicopter pilot and police officer. GOP Rep. Zach Nunn, an Air Force officer, was first elected in 2022 – defeating Democratic Rep. Early voting trends cannot predict the outcome of an election, but they can provide clues about who is voting – at least so far. Early voting in Georgia and North CarolinaWhile preelection turnout is generally down, Georgia is an outlier. CNN —While there are still five weeks until Election Day, voting is already underway across the country and a CNN review suggests pre-election voting this year will drop from the pandemic-era highs of 2020. That’s a tiny fraction of the roughly 158 million votes cast for president in the 2020 election. The downtick in interest in early voting so far shouldn’t be surprising. The 2020 election featured historic levels of pre-election voting during the COVID-19 pandemic. CNN —Kamala Harris has the support of enough Democratic delegates to win the party’s nomination for president, according to CNN’s delegate estimate. Harris crossed the threshold amid a wave of endorsements from state delegations Monday evening. CNN’s count comes from public statements of support from delegates and state delegations, CNN reporting and conversations with delegates. Endorsements from state delegations are counted as unanimous support for Harris absent other information. Mike Gallagher said Saturday he will not seek reelection, making him the latest Republican to announce an exit from Congress as the House GOP looks to save its shrinking majority in November. The House is expected to hold another vote on impeaching Mayorkas as soon as next week, when Majority Leader Steve Scalise returns from receiving cancer treatments.
