Verily, the life sciences group owned by Alphabet, laid off staff this week as part of a restructuring in its molecular sciences group, Business Insider has learned. Verily spokesperson Steven Cooper confirmed the cuts in an email to BI, stating that the affected employees worked on Verily's Immune Profiler project, which studies the human immune system for improving disease management. He declined to share the exact number of employees cut, but one source familiar with the situation said 35-40 people were affected. Verily is in the process of separating from Alphabet's infrastructure, part of a project named Flywheel that BI first reported on in 2021. It has set the end of 2024 as the deadline for detachment, a person familiar with the project told BI.

Listening to favorite songs could reduce people’s perception of pain, according to a new study published Wednesday in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research. And the most effective pain relievers were found to be sad songs detailing bittersweet and emotional experiences. He was not involved in the latest study but has conducted his own research on the relationship between pain and music. With millions of songs available, one person’s favorite song is likely not the same as another. While he didn’t research chills in this study, Valevicius hypothesized that these sensations might be signs of sensory gating.

CNN —Astronomers have detected a crucial carbon molecule in space for the first time using the James Webb Space Telescope. Methyl cation is considered a key component that helps form more complex carbon-based molecules. The space observatory detected methyl cation in a protoplanetary disk, called d203-506, swirling around a young red dwarf star. ESA/Webb/NASA/CSAWhile methyl cation doesn’t react efficiently with hydrogen, the most abundant molecule in the universe, it reacts well with a wide range of other molecules. But methyl cation wasn’t detected in space until now.

Scientists found no trace of disease in the preserved heart of a French woman who a pope beatified. Pauline Jaricot, whose health was poor, was supposedly "cured" after a visit with the Pope in 1837. Some members of the Catholic Church see the recent findings as a sign of a miracle. Despite living with poor heart health for most of her life, Catholics have said a visit to Pope Gregory XVI in 1837 miraculously "cured" her of heart disease. "No evidence that was inconsistent with natural and spontaneous conservation not mediated by the hand of man, which can be considered a miracle by the Roman Catholic Church, could be retrieved," the scientists said.
