In addition, Spectrum pledged to give customers automatic credits for internet outages that are out of their control or when the company's customer service doesn't live up to its promises. That's in part because broadband customer growth at providers including Charter and Comcast has struggled, according to the companies' earnings reports. Spectrum Mobile has 8.8 million total lines and has grown rapidly due to enticing promotional deals and increased mobile usage on reliable Wi-Fi networks, the company said. "When I think about Wall Street, I think about the customer," Winfrey said. At approximately 2:14 PM, MCSO initiated a motor vehicle stop. Shortly after the motor vehicle stop, ROUTH was asked if he knew why he was being stopped; he responded in the affirmative. Database checks indicate that a mobile phone assigned call number 1-***-***-8342 is serviced by T-Mobile US, Inc. ("T-Mobile") and that ROUTH is the subscriber. Agents requested T-Mobile, on an emergency basis, to provide law enforcement with information pertaining to ROUTH's mobile phone usage. Verizon misses quarterly revenue estimates on slow phone upgrades
  + stars: | 2024-07-22 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Verizon Communications missed quarterly revenue estimates on Monday due to slow phone upgrades in the United States, taking the shine off strong growth in wireless subscribers and sending shares of the telecom firm down 3.4% before the bell. Verizon reported second-quarter revenue of $32.8 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $33.06 billion, according to LSEG data. Verizon said it added 148,000 net monthly bill-paying wireless phone subscribers from April to June, above analysts' average estimate of 127,870 additions, according to Visible Alpha. It even raised the price of some older plans in March to prompt customers to switch to the new plans. The company's consumer business reported net losses of 8,000 wireless retail postpaid phone subscribers in the latest quarter, compared with 136,000 losses a year earlier.

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon confirmed to CNN that their customers are experiencing intermittent issues while traveling overseas. “We’re one of several providers impacted by a third-party vendor’s issue that is intermittently affecting some international roaming service,” a T-Mobile spokesperson told CNN. “We’re working with them to resolve it.”Meanwhile, Verizon told CNN about 30% of its customers’ calls and data connections from overseas are not going through right now. The issue stems from an international third-party communications provider called Syniverse, which manages international roaming connections for various carriers. “Since the onset of these issues, Syniverse has been working closely with our network partners to restore full service,” the statement said.

The Nasdaq sank 2% on Friday as Netflix dropped nearly 11% post-earnings and Club stock Nvidia fell 10%, entering bear market territory but still up more than 50% in 2024. Following a much stronger-than-expected March retail sales report last month, fresh economic data and six Club stock earnings will take center stage in the week ahead. While lower rates may help stock multiples, that is not a sustainable path to higher equity prices over time. The Big Tech earnings next week could revive a flagging market, or at least give investors direction into where stocks are going from here. Wall Street is hoping next week's megacap tech results will give investors insight into where the artificial intelligence trade is going from here, as a bounce in tech could lift the indexes. Google unveils a new way to search

The company said it’s been quietly testing the tools to see how generative AI, the technology that underpins viral chatbots including ChatGPT, can make Search more personalized and intuitive since last year. It will also launch on a handful of other high-end Android smartphones, including the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro, starting January 3. The first feature, called Circle to Search, allows Android users to circle, tap, highlight or scribble on pictures, videos or text to learn more about what they see, such as a landmark in the back of someone’s social media page. Google gave the example of coming across an unfamiliar board game at a yard sale, and asking the tool about how the game is played. Over the years, Google has made changes to Search such as enabling search-by-voice or its Lens tool, which uses image recognition technology through a smartphone’s cameras to learn more about the world around them.

By any measure, cash-bleeding Rakuten Mobile is deeply troubled. Rakuten is set for another tough year in 2024 with investors keen to see if it can achieve its goal of having the mobile unit break even. Those steps have raised some 800 billion yen ($5.4 billion). Then in October, SoftBank Corp (9434.T), Japan's No.3 mobile network provider, began offering a generous reward campaign for most mobile users using SoftBank Group's (9984.T) PayPay online payment system. Without profits, the mobile unit is not likely to entice would-be suitors and competition laws would probably prevent the likes of SoftBank and Docomo from bidding.

T-Mobile has had a freer hand to adjust its wireless plans since many of the state and federal agreements tied to its Sprint takeover expired earlier this year. Photo: Yuki Iwamura/Bloomberg NewsT-Mobile US said it is scrapping a program that would have forced some customers into more expensive wireless plans, citing customer blowback. Details of the planned upgrades surfaced on Reddit earlier this month after T-Mobile started training its support staff to respond to the program. Executives planned to shift customers on some older plans to newer tiers with more features that generally cost $5 to $10 more per line unless they opted out of the change by contacting the company.

T-Mobile now expects adjusted free cash flow for the year to be between $13.4 billion and $13.6 billion, compared with its prior forecast of $13.2 billion to $13.6 billion. T-Mobile added 850,000 postpaid phone customers in the third quarter, the highest among peers, beating FactSet estimates of 773,400 additions. It raised its full-year forecast for wireless subscriber net additions to between 5.7 million and 5.9 million, up from its earlier forecast of 5.6 million to 5.9 million. The telecom industry has been seeing a gradual moderation in postpaid phone net additions after hitting record levels in 2021 and 2022. Industry-wide postpaid phone net additions are expected to moderate in 2023 to 8.5 million from a near-record 9.3 million in 2022, according to analysts at Goldman Sachs.

Video calls are broadly considered proxies for face-to-face meetings and therefore are currently subject to little or no formal record-keeping obligations. At least two major global banks are now recording Zoom calls, said sources with knowledge of the matter, who declined to be named because the information is not public. One bank is recording Zoom calls undertaken by certain staff, including traders, while the other is recording all Zoom calls so content can be reviewed later if needed. FINRA declined to comment on how many firms were subject to the rule or whether the rule also extended to video calls. Video calls pose "unique risks" and technology needed to efficiently screen video calls is not widely used, said Matt Smith, CEO of communications surveillance firm SteelEye.

Amazon is working on a secret new initiative, called Project Nile, that overhauls its search engine to add AI chatbot technology. One potential outcome from the upgraded search experience is more sales from mobile users, according to a transcript of an internal presentation earlier this year by Joseph Sirosh, VP of Amazon Search and Alexa Shopping. Sirosh said it will be "mobile first" because that's where the new features may have the biggest impact on sales. "If we can increase the conversion on mobile, because we provide great experiences, great expert answers, then that could be a potentially significant lift to Amazon," Sirosh added. During the presentation, Sirosh said the new AI conversation layer will be added to the currently existing Amazon search bar.

Google has grabbed a 90% market share in search in the U.S. in recent years, according to government estimates. Rather, the makers of phones and web browsers set Google search as their default because they wanted to deliver the "highest quality" experience for their customers, Google claimed in its January filing. The Justice Department has the burden to show that Google's business deals harmed competition for search.
