Roland Dumas, a former French foreign minister, agile political fixer and star defense lawyer whose taste for living large proved his undoing, died on July 3 in Paris. The office of President Emmanuel Macron of France announced his death in a statement, which did not specify a cause. A longtime confidant of François Mitterrand, the Socialist former president, Mr. Dumas was one of the highest-profile officials in France for two decades. Mr. Dumas avoided jail, but his conviction, which was eventually overturned, ended his career. He had already been forced to resign from the presidency of the Constitutional Council, France’s highest appeals body.

Poster of Christophe Versini for the Rassemblement National (National Rally) party, with Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella on it, on June 24, 2024. Recent polling suggests the far-right Rassemblement National (RN, or National Rally) party, led by Jordan Bardella, could win the most seats in the National Assembly, followed by the left-wing alliance Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP, or New Popular Front). French bond yields — which move inversely to prices — have been relatively contained. Even then, he added, the spread of French bond yields over their German counterparts looked set to remain higher than before Macron called the election. There is little concern over France enacting its own "Frexit," he said, with even National Rally having moved away from actively proposing leaving the euro area or the European Union.

CNN —It’s the recurring threat President Joe Biden’s reelection bid will never be able to fully outrun. Democrats accused Republicans quoted or referred to in the account of making false claims and contradicting previous statements to damage Biden politically. But all it takes is one halting on-camera moment or media report to revive the frenzy over Biden’s age. Biden’s team habitually dismisses any concern over his capacity, and his doctors have certified him fit for duty. But they are concerned about Biden’s age.

The human brain has trouble pulling names out of stuffed memory banks on cue. But when are those and other verbal stumbles normal, and when might they be a sign of cognitive trouble? Former President Donald Trump, Biden's likely opponent in the November presidential election, has also. And while Trump often brags about passing a screening-style memory test several years ago, Lenze said the best assessment includes rigorous neuropsychological testing. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

Voters have repeatedly said they are worried about Biden's age. In the wake of special counsel Robert Hur's report, Democrats are rallying around the president. AdvertisementDemocrats are betting voters don’t care if President Joe Biden flubs a foreign leader’s name or key detail. “He knew exactly where the negotiation was going to go and he took Kevin McCarthy’s shirt.”Advertisement"I think President Biden is incredibly experienced, knowledgeable, wise. “He is not fit to be President.”Democrats were quick to point out that Trump, Biden’s almost certain challenger, has suffered his own recent flubs.

How damaging are all the renewed questions about age and mental acuity going to be? One Democratic member of the House responded to being told of the questions about age and memory raised in the report with a morbid laugh and sullen shake of the head. Inside the White House and among Biden’s reelection campaign staff, the tension is constant. Biden aides also feel themselves that this hasn’t been enough. Most importantly, they reflect what Biden aides have learned from experience: Nothing combats questions about the president’s competence as much as people seeing him in action.

Biden’s aides know there is no topic more likely to draw their boss’ fury than a slight against his family. Only about 45 minutes before Hur’s report was released publicly, the White House was working to downplay the verbal slip-ups, saying it’s common for people to misspeak. “Many people, elected officials … they can misspeak sometimes,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, citing recent examples from House Speaker Mike Johnson and TV host Sean Hannity. The report was released anyway, with the objections of Biden’s lawyers included – but only toward the end of the nearly 400-page report. “I was in the middle of handling an international crisis,” Biden said Thursday about an hour after the report was released.

Two verbal slip-ups in the last few days are again bringing the concerns about the president’s cognition to the forefront. A January NBC poll of 1,000 registered voters found that three quarters of all voters, including half of Democrats, had concerns about Biden’s physical or mental health. The White House did not immediately provide a response to this story. In last year’s physical, Biden’s physician said an “extremely detailed” neurologic exam found no findings that would be consistent with stroke, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. As with his previous physical in 2021, the White House did not say whether Biden underwent any cognitive tests, which some doctors recommend for older adults.

When the Radio France sign pops up in “The Passengers of the Night,” you know it won’t be long before the movie’s most vivid character lands a job there. Given her instrument’s breathy intimacy and how delicately it brushes the ear, though, whispering can certainly feel more accurate. Élisabeth is a mess when the story opens, so that voice gets a workout. Mostly, she does this by re-entering the world — she finds a job and then another, meets one lover and then a second — a trajectory that involves rejection but also approval. The director Mikhaël Hers’s approach in “Passengers” is at once precise and elliptical.

French writer Jacques Attali never wrote about a plan to reduce the population by creating or finding a pandemic virus in his book, “Verbatim: 1981 - 1986.” However, social media users are sharing a video showing a purported excerpt from the book to suggest that Attali predicted the COVID-19 pandemic. We will have taken care of having panned the treatment, a treatment that will be the solution. Attali mentions the word “treatment” multiple times in the book, mostly in the sense of behavior toward someone, and only once in the medical sense. These false claims include the idea that Attali mentioned that a pandemic is necessary to establish a New World Order and advocated for euthanasia of the elderly. While the book “Verbatim” is indeed written by Jacques Attali, the English excerpt shared in the viral posts online does not occur in French anywhere in the book.

The sudden sell-off in the pound and U.K. bond markets led economists to anticipate more aggressive interest rate hikes from the Bank of England . I was surprised when the new chancellor spoke over the weekend of the need for even more tax cuts," Summers said on Twitter. U.K. inflation unexpectedly fell to 9.9% in August, and analysts recalibrated their eye-watering expectations after the government stepped in to cap annual household energy bills. 'Emerging market currency crisis'Sterling has fallen by roughly 7-8% on a trade-weighted basis in less than two months, and strategists at Dutch bank ING noted Tuesday that traded volatility levels for the pound are "those you would expect during an emerging market currency crisis." The likening of the U.K. to an emerging market economy has become more prevalent among market commentators in recent days.
