Tim Walz vowed to protect his state from President-elect Donald Trump’s “hateful agenda” while delivering remarks in Eagan, Minnesota, on Friday afternoon. “The other side spent a lot of time campaigning and talking about and promising that they would leave things up to the states. “The moment they try and bring a hateful agenda in this state, I’m going to stand ready to stand up and fight,” said the 60-year-old governor as supporters applauded. “As long as I’m governor of Minnesota, we will defend our kids’ freedom to go to school without worrying about being shot dead in their classroom,” said Walz. After promising to fight against the Trump-Vance agenda, he extended an olive branch to Trump-supporting Minnesotans.

St. Olaf College boasted an 87.6% voter turnout rate in 2020, taking home the top prize in the All In Campus Democracy Challenge as the most civically engaged college campus in the country. The small liberal arts college reached that number with help from its “election ambassador program,” and this year, the school is looking to break its own record. “We are all about interpersonal connections,” said junior Roxi Wessel, an election ambassador. Several factors make St. Olaf the highest-voting college in the country, including its nonpartisan approach to the election ambassador program. Jen McAndrew, from Tuft University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, said that while Minnesota makes campus voting accessible, laws in other states are creating more barriers to entry.

A city leading the country on housing policyMinnesota's biggest city — Minneapolis — has long been a national leader on pro-housing policy. A lawsuit in 2022 paused the policy's implementation until the Minnesota state legislature passed a law — signed by Walz — in May allowing the plan to go forward. Where Tim Walz Stands on the Issues

Tim Walz of Minnesota, the newly announced running mate to Vice President Kamala Harris, has worked with his state’s Democratic-controlled Legislature to enact an ambitious agenda of liberal policies: free college tuition for low-income students, free meals for schoolchildren, legal recreational marijuana and protections for transgender people. “You don’t win elections to bank political capital,” Mr. Walz wrote last year about his approach to governing. “You win elections to burn political capital and improve lives.”Republicans have slammed these policies as big-government liberalism and accused Mr. Walz of taking a hard left turn since he represented a politically divided district in Congress years ago. Here is an overview of where Mr. Walz stands on some key issues. AbortionMr. Walz signed a bill last year that guaranteed Minnesotans a “fundamental right to make autonomous decisions” about reproductive health care on issues such as abortion, contraception and fertility treatments.

To rate each state's infrastructure, we look at roads, bridges, ports and airports. New in 2024, we evaluate so-called site readiness programs set up in many states to link companies with shovel-ready sites. The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama offers one of the more robust site readiness programs in the nation. Roads, bridges, and broadband are also in excellent shape in Tennessee. A respectable 24% of the state's power comes from renewable energy, putting it in the top half of states.

New York CNN —Minnesota government officials have struck a deal with rideshare companies Uber and Lyft to set minimum wage standards for drivers, lawmakers announced Saturday night. On Friday, the former president will be back, speaking at a fund-raising dinner for the Minnesota Republican Party in St. Paul that is open only to paying guests and invited media. Whether the visit is a feint to draw Democratic dollars to the state or a true effort to expand the electoral map, only the Trump campaign knows. The Trump campaign believes it can capitalize on — or foment — a backlash to the leftward march of the Twin Cities and still-fresh memories of the unrest after the killing of George Floyd. “We have a real opportunity to expand the map here,” Chris LaCivita, a senior Trump campaign adviser, told The Associated Press ahead of Mr. Trump’s visit. In an interview with a conservative radio station in March, Mr. Trump falsely claimed he won Minnesota in 2020.

For people in Minnesota, the sauna is a link to the past and a way to form new bonds. Feb. 17, 2024Jumping in a hole in a frozen lake during a subzero Minnesota winter evening is brutal. On the banks of Lake Minnewashta in Excelsior, just outside Minneapolis, the answer lies in a dimly lit, wood-burning barrel-shaped sauna a few feet away. Minnesotans have begun partaking in a version of this ritual in droves as a tradition imported by the state’s Nordic settlers in the late 1800s has gone mainstream. While cold plunging is not obligatory — and some opt out — most of the new sauna venues encourage even mild forms of cold exposure, like dumping a bucket of cold water on your head.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is trying to censure Ilhan Omar and boot her from her committees. AdvertisementRep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is forcing the House to vote next week to rebuke Rep. Ilhan Omar for a widely misquoted speech she recently delivered about Somalia. The Georgia Republican's resolution would censure the Minnesota Democrat and remove her from the remainder of her committees. In November, she forced a vote on a censure resolution against Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan for "inciting an insurrection" by speaking at a pro-Palestinian protest. But Greene's Tlaib censure failed after 23 Republicans voted against it, and Tlaib was later censured via a much more narrowly-tailored resolution days later.
