Last year, China was the leading car supplier to Mexico, exporting $4.6 billion worth of vehicles to the country, according to the Mexican Ministry of Economy. "The Chinese automakers came to the country very aggressively," said Juan Carlos Baker, former Mexican deputy minister for international trade. That free trade access is part of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a revised iteration of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that removed tariffs on many goods traded between the North American countries starting in 2018. "We've seen China do this in other types of manufacturing as well, from appliances to auto parts to steel," said Paul. Watch the video to learn more about how Mexico has become a hot spot for Chinese auto companies and how the next administration may impact EV trade policies.

“Without Nepal, Japan would not function.”The yellow flowers of the paperbush shrub seen in Dolakha, Nepal, in December 2023. Its bark has long, strong fibers that are perfect for making thin yet durable paper, according to the Kantou website. But as the shortage of Japanese paperbush became evident in the following years, Kanpou and the Nepali farmers ramped up production until they became the main source of the yen bill. It’s a protracted process, said Matsubara: farmers plant seedlings in early summer, harvest their branches in the fall, then spend several months processing the bark through steaming, peeling, washing and drying. The profits from the paperbush sales have provided a new revenue stream to Nepali communities, said Matsubara.

CNN —More than a hundred thousand protesters took to the streets of Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina Tuesday to demand President Javier Milei increase funding for public universities. The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) said in a statement that around 800,000 people took part in the protests in Buenos Aires, while Milei’s government claimed there were 150,000 protesters, according to local media. Milei’s government has defended its decision to freeze the 2023 budget for public universities, announcing increases only in operating expenses, which according to the UBA account for just 15% of spending needs. Students, teachers and political leaders take part in a march against budget cuts to universities in Buenos Aires on April 23. In January, labor unions organized a nationwide general strike against austerity measures and reforms, and thousands took to the streets to protest.

In just a few hours, the nation of Israel went from business as usual to national emergency and national mourning. Throughout this ongoing crisis, the resilience of Israel's economy has once again taken center stage. This should be no surprise, as resilience has always been a key tenet of Israel's long-term success, military or otherwise. Most recently, the Covid-19 pandemic struck a terrible blow to Israel's economy in the second quarter of 2020, reducing GDP by roughly 30% annualized. The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange's flagship TA-125 Index dropped over 8% in that war's opening days, but took only 40 days to recover to pre-war levels.

A notable past Disruptor 50 company that made it to the public market this year, Instacart , has failed to maintain its IPO pricing. Business failures, too, have occurred for formerly high-flying, high-profile backed Disruptor 50 companies, including Convoy and WeWork. This is especially true of companies involved in the booming AI hype cycle sparked by 2023's top Disruptor 50 company, OpenAI, just over a year ago. 2024 honorees will be notified in April, and the list will be released in May across CNBC's TV and digital platforms.

Having experienced a multi-decade decline after 1990, Japanese stocks have escaped the doldrums. Reuters GraphicsAnother shadow that has long lingered over corporate Japan is management teams which tended to neglect shareholders and prioritise the interests of other stakeholders. METI is also redefining the aim of Japanese companies, says Stephen Codrington, founder of the independent research firm Codrington Japan. Japan, whose regime was formerly unfriendly to equity investors, is moving in the opposite direction, says Drew Edwards, head of GMO Usonian Japan. Southeast Asia looks to renewable power for energy security

As energy demand grows, the region is turning to renewable energy to safeguard its energy security. Most, if not all, Southeast Asian markets have taken strides to announce renewable energy targets and formulate their low-carbon energy transition plans, said Thoo. Other planned developments include an integrated renewable energy zone, five centralized large-scale solar parks and three green hydrogen production plants. These projects will leverage Malaysia's estimated 290 gigawatts of technical renewable energy potential to create a more resilient, low-carbon power system, said the ministry. Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are projected to account for at least 31% of national energy needs by 2030, the government said, according to Reuters.

By last year, with sanctions elsewhere tightening, Russia was buying more than a quarter of Japan's used-car exports for an average price of almost $8,200. That was more than double the price in 2020, when Russia took about 15% of Japan's used-car exports. Those sales had been on track to top $1.9 billion for all of 2023 before Japan imposed its own tougher sanctions, trade data show. A system of mandatory inspections pushes the cost of maintaining used cars higher for customers in Japan. Battery recycling firm 4R Energy has seen a "significant" tailwind from declining used-car prices, including the Nissan Leaf, said chief executive Yutaka Horie.

In the past five months the improvement has been tremendous," TSMC Chairman Mark Liu said of the Arizona project last week.
