With Brazil struggling in its efforts to create a regulated carbon market, the country’s new president is moving to scrap his predecessor’s approach and start anew. Financing carbon-capture projects such as reforestation could also generate carbon credits. For example, a local regulated carbon market could help exporters avoid the carbon border adjustment mechanism the EU plans to charge on some imported products from 2026. Exporters also hope a regulated market would help repair Brazil’s abysmal environmental reputation, a product of its history of deforestation. The da Silva administration plans to have a carbon market operating in a couple of years, Toni said.

BRASILIA, June 1 (Reuters) - Brazil posted a $11.4 billion trade surplus in May, marking a record for any given month since the data series began in 1989, official data showed on Thursday. The figure also came above the $9 billion surplus expected in a Reuters poll with economists, backed by a surge in the volume of exports that more than offset price drops. Herlon Brandao, the director of Foreign Trade Intelligence and Statistics at the ministry, attributed the significant boost in Brazilian exports to the country's record-breaking agricultural harvest, with robust soybean shipments. From January to May, the positive balance of trade soared by 39.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching $35.3 billion. Following the ministry's initial projection for a $84 billion trade surplus this year, Brandao said that the figure is expected to be changed in the upcoming review in July, considering more favorable export prospects.

WARSAW, March 3 (Reuters) - Polish voters were given food for thought on Friday, as politicians from the two main parties traded accusations that the other side planned to push meat-loving citizens into eating worms ahead of elections this autumn. "For the upcoming elections, PO politicians should write on each poster 'Instead of chicken eat a worm', because this is their real election programme," PiS lawmaker Bartosz Kownacki told reporters. State-run broadcaster TVP Info accompanied Kownacki's press conference with a news ticker reading "The opposition's proposals for Poles: worms instead of meat". TVP Info has been regularly criticised by the opposition as being a mouthpiece for government propaganda. However, PO politicians and city hall officials say this does not mean proposals to force people to lower meat consumption and eat worms are under consideration.
